There was a story going around graduate school about an electrical engineer dissertation exam.

The question was how would you determine if the interior light of a refrigerator went out when the door was closed. This lead to a 1/2 hour response which was interrupted by the professor who asked the question. He then said, why don't you just push the light bulb control button and see if the bulb goes out.

Yes, a very few PhD can be out of contact with the pragmatic world. I have met quite a few like this, but the vast majority of PhDs that I know are much more in contact with the real world and pragmatism than the general population. MOre of the extremes in the educated class, as some really don't care about the reral world.
