AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. A study found that a years-old Moderna patent included a genomic sequence that was a “reverse complement” of a small portion of the SARS-CoV-2 genome. Experts say that finding doesn’t say anything about the origin of the coronavirus.

THE FACTS: A conspiracy theory website and social media posts are citing a recent scientific paper to falsely claim that it proves Moderna, which developed a COVID-19 vaccine, also “created” the coronavirus that causes the disease.

“Whilst you were distracted by the Battle for Ukraine, Documents were published confirming Moderna created the Covid-19 Virus,” reads a headline from the Daily Expose that has been shared across social media.

But experts and an author of the study say the paper does not prove that.

“We understood from the beginning that this match could be random chance and stated this in the article very prominently,” said Dr. Bala Ambati, a study author who is an ophthalmologist and professor at the University of Oregon. He said in an email that the authors “are not casting aspersions on any person, company, or country.”

The paper used a public database for sequences known as BLAST and found that a Moderna patent filed in 2016 includes a complementary part — known as the “reverse complement” — of a 19-nucleotide sequence seen in the SARS-CoV-2 genome.

Nucleotides are the building blocks of DNA and RNA. The sequence in the coronavirus being referenced relates to what’s known as the furin cleavage site, a part of the virus that helps it to infect cells.

But the discovery of that reverse complement in a years-old patent is far from proof that Moderna “created” the virus, experts say.

The research paper says “absolutely nothing” about the origin of COVID-19, said Ryan Langlois, an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Minnesota.
