Political discussions about everything

An announcement from the US Office of Personnel Management has revealed the US was hacked and files on government personnel were accessed and taken. Personal information was accessed last year and the intrusion was detected in April. China has been blamed for the hack by government sources and that'd make this hack the second breach from the country in a year.

There is a bit of a side story to this. About 20 years ago, China demanded that Microsoft give them the source code for Windows or they would throw billions into developing the Open Source software BSD and distribute it worldwide. Microsoft envisioned the loss of billions so they gave the source code to China (no one gets the source code from Microsoft except China.) With the source code hacking is easy. In my opinion, what Microsoft did borders on treason.

China again (Beware)

Buying almost any electronic from China is risky nowadays, but a new report from Heise gives even more of a reason to be careful if you are buying phones from the country. Heise says that the Star N9500 Android smartphone has been found to include the Uupay.D trojan. The malware is able to collect personal information by pretending to be the phone's app store.

The malware is so obvious, and has clearly come from the manufacturer, that a Kaspersky security researcher said that the N9500 "comes from the factory with an extensive espionage program."

If you have a Star N9500 Android smartphone you have been hacked.

The funny thing is what OPM offers -- credit-monitoring.

So the info was not properly protected, and what it offers current and former federal employees is credit monitoring which every person has to do on an ongoing basis anyhow.

The Director of the US Office of Personnel Management held a press conference where she was bragging about how under her oversight they caught the hack after it happened. She was giddy with excitement as she talked of how they found out about the hacking. Only in the government would that be considered a success which will probably result in a huge bonus for her and her staff. In the civilian sector she would have been fired.

In the former Soviet Union she would have been taken to the Lubyanka prison and been shot. That prospect rather focuses one on ones work ethic. Rather extreme, but allowing this to happen should have some consequences.

I will make the decision for you, but I must be immune of the consequences of that decision if I am wrong......

And their answer is....."OK."

The NSA’s plan to protect America by starting cyberwars is absurd. Their argument that they need more power to do it is
The government's solution to EVERYTHING is MORE money.

I've been reading about this hacking of the data of 4 million federal employees/retirees.

The "response" of the federal government to the employees is to hire a private firm to monitor their credit for 18 months.

And to claim that "homeland security" is involved.

You know, the same "homeland security" people who allow 12 million illegal immigrants to cross the open southern border at will.

The same Dick Tracy-esque folks who pretended the Ft Hood slaughter was mere "workplace violence."
