The Russians are claiming a fire broke out on the sub killing 14 of the 25 man nuclear sub before they could put the fire out. They also claim, the sub was only used for mapping out the ocean floors, not combat and was in Russian waters. No mention of hitting anything or being fired upon. That's the Russian's official version, not a peep from the US on what may have happened.

The Russian sub is specially built for deep water dives and has several extreme reinforcements to withstand the dives, so who knows they may have played tag with an American sub knowing their sub was stronger built. Time will tell.
