Mussolini and Hitler were more psychopathic than criminal.
Hitler was squeezed from the air (Lancaster bombers), by the US advance, and by the clanking of Russian tanks.
Like many other soldiers, I sat on Hitler's furniture in the lobby of the General Walker Hotel, and you could take a stroll and see the ruins of his alpine compound.
You can also visit his guest house (unbombed) -- the Kehlsteinhaus, with its magnificent balcony and view.
There, soldiers from the Third Division were sitting in the sunshine, not too far into May of 1945, on the balcony and drinking Hitler's wine.
Well, Hitler didn't drink, but his guests did.
That's how you know you have won a war -- when some private is sitting on the deck of the enemy leader's guest house and sipping his wine.
