I recently hired a millennial, so far he's been on time and is a good worker but that kid expects to be patted on the back every time he completes something. Last week he came into my office with a sad puppy look on his face and asked why I wasn't happy with his work, I told him he was doing a good job and that if I wasn't happy with his work he would know it. He continued to stand in front of my desk with the sad puppy look, I asked what was bothering him. He said I hadn't commented on the last project he had completed or thanked him for it. I told him he shouldn't be expected to be thanked in life for doing a job he's getting paid to do, also my comments are reserved for something I note is exceptional or didn't meet expectations. No comment means he did a good job per my expectations. He continued to stand there with the sad puppy look, he then came right out and asked me what I thought of his last project, I told him it met my expectations and that he needed to get back to work. I think he went to find a safe place after leaving my office.
