Political discussions about everything

After being a registered Republican for all of my life up until now, I have changed my registration to Independent. I can no longer associate myself with the insane politics of the hardrightturds running the GOP. I am not a billionaire so the GOP does not represent me or even the vast majority of the citizenry. It disturbs me that both houses of Congress go about the People's Business with so little thought about the welfare of the people. "Party first, the people be damned" seems to be the mantra of the GOP.

I'll leave it there and give the posters a chance to tear me up for being disgusted with the state of American politics and the blind allegiance to a President with obvious mental problems and a Congress that works only to get reelected.

An old saying, "People always get the type of government they deserve.".

Ah, our resident hater who brands anyone who has a thought that is different than his a libtard or some other disparaging label. We should cut him some slack though since his extensive military career (that he proudly waves in everyone's face) qualifies him as a "Political Scientist." I must have missed something though, I served 4 years active duty and 4 years in the reserves and there's a lot about politics that I don't know or understand. I try though. I study my elected officials voting records and often call or write to them. I have worked on several campaigns both local and Federal. I know my elected officials names and they know me by name or sight. I avoid Fox News like the plague and research issues extensively. I found an amazing fact that I will share with our members, Politicians lie and always seek to be reelected. Never tell the truth when a lie will do.

I know that facts are a bit troublesome, but...

a. We are being constantly told that we are taxed harshly. Not true! The only countries less taxed than the USA (per capita) are Mexico, Chile, Cuba and Japan. http://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?QueryId=21699" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

b. Almost all countries that are taxed just a bit more than the USA provide maternity leave for both parents, free health care, free higher education, free paid vacations and so on.

c. Education is the key to a vibrant and growing country. $400 billion of the Trump Tax Scam would have provided free college to all who qualified and wanted it. Finland had one of the worse education systems in the world. They turned it around in 4 years by doing the opposite of what we do. If we don't invest in education we had better learn to speak Russian or Chinese.

d. It was on the news yesterday that China is investing $2 billion in an Artificial Intelligence Center to become the leader in the word in AI. Russia is ready to field a unmanned tank run by AI. AI is the future of the world, we can not afford to fall behind.

e. High on the Trump agenda for 2018 is the infrastructure. Where is the money going to come from? Remember we gave the money away to the billionaires. I can see it now, Trump and the GOP is going to say that we need a new tax to fund this multi-trillion dollar program. (That's not really a tax though (spin, spin, spin) because we need to fix our infrastructure.)
The tax will probably be structured so that those least able to pay it will be saddled with the tax. The Dems will fight the tax and Trump and the GOP will blame the fail on the Dems. Bottom line...There is no money left, we gave it away in the Trump Tax Scam.

f. I was against Trump even before the election. I supported Gov. Kasik. This man Trump is unhinged. Since the tell-all book by Wolf came out Trump has issued 18 Tweets. Government by Tweet? This is very dangerous in the extreme. He even jabs Kim of North Korea constantly as if nuclear war is just a little thing. I remember during the transition period Trump asked,"If we have Nuclear weapons why can't we use them?"

g. It seems that the main agenda of the Trump administration is to undo all that the previous administration did. Wouldn't it make sense to craft your own agenda to cement your Country's place in the future? Everything Congress is doing (both parties) is based on the present. We are proceeding like the future will take care of itself. There are no long term goals to ensure our future.

h. The Trump Tax Scam will throw 13.5 million people off of health care. Those that cannot pay will default on their debt and the debt will be paid by those of us who do have insurance. I agree that Obamacare was flawed but you don't make major policy changes that affect millions overnight, you phase them in.

If you avoid Fox News, then that suggests an allegiance to CNN and MSNBC, both of which specialize in Trump hating and race baiting.

What a rational person should do is take in information from a wide variety of sources on the Left, Right, and Center.

Assuming Trump is hard Right is absurd. The Repub Establishment, like the Dems and the Leftist Media, were all against Trump.

As to Trump throwing millions off health care, that is preposterous because all he did was end the individual mandate and allow millions who NEVER WANTED OR NEEDED Obamacare to elect not to buy it.

After being a registered Republican for all of my life up until now, I have changed my registration to Independent.
I've been a registered Democrat for all of my life and I'm thinking about becoming an Independent also. I'm growing tired of defending my Democratic party in light of all the criminal activity they've been involved in. I've been shocked by the breaking news over the last few weeks, Hillary and Obama's actions have let me down, I'm so disillusioned with the Democrats, I'm not sure I can continue to support them.
By Clownkicker
#98239
Why would you bother defending the Democrat Party?

If they do something wrong, it's wrong. If they do something right, it's right.
And if you're defending something right, then that's what you SHOULD do.
The "Democrat" thing has nothing to do with it. You certainly shouldn't defend something wrong just because it's from your party.

What I can't figure out is why you spend so much time defending the Republican Party.
No matter what they do, good or bad, you defend them.

Out of loyalty to my party. Sure the Democratic party sucks and is full of low lives and criminals, but it's my party.

You've really got to get over that nonsense. Blind loyalty to a party?

That's the kind of thing Trump is demanding of his cronies, and you see where that's getting us.

If Bannon is to be believed, then we have treasonous people in the White House simply because they are loyal.

Snakeoil, the web sites you have linked are Left-leaning as you surely must realize.

If you read Huff Post or Politifact (funny name since it is spin, not fact), then of course you will be enraged at Trump.

But Snakeoil, here is the deal.

If you have a brain and an education, which presumably you do, go ahead and say whatever you have to say.

But I'm not going to waste my time clicking on links to Left Wing drivel any more than I expend time clicking on Right Wing sites.
By Clownkicker

"What a rational person should do is take in information from a wide variety of sources on the Left, Right, and Center."-johnfibs

Then he comes right out and tells us he won't read Left- or Right-leaning news sites.

"But I'm not going to waste my time clicking on links to Left Wing drivel any more than I expend time clicking on Right Wing sites."-johnfoibles

So he's not just a hypocrite, but he's a liar too. Or at least not "rational" by his own measure.
By johnforbes
#98251
To state the obvious, the realm of available information is very wide, and it consists of odd things known as "books" and "journals" and such.

You don't need to be on Left or Right sites in order to take in a wide range of info.

Clowntoker understands all this and agrees with me on it.

So you take in views from "Left, Right, and Center" except you don't take in "Left" or "Right" sources.

johnny, what part of "a wide variety of sources on the Left, Right, and Center" doesn't include "Left or Right sites in order to take in a wide range of info."?

Books take months to write, publish, and distribute. And journals typically come out monthly or quarterly.
If your news is one to six months old, it's practically irrelevant these days, and that means you're essentially ignorant on a day to day basis.
(You just know johnforbes anxiously awaits his bi-monthly issue of Mother Jones so he can finally learn about whats going on in America from a liberal viewpoint. )

Be sure to let us know when the book comes out on Trump firing Comey so we can finally start a thread and talk about it.
By johnforbes
#98260
Not so.

The Republic dates to about 380 BC, and it remains relevant today.

Mortimer Adler's great books approach will equip any person with far better ability to think about current events than any amount of Left or Right web sites.

Machiavelli knew everything there was to know about high officials in "justice" and "law enforcement" conspiring to protect Hillary and frame Trump.

Not the specific individuals, of course, but their type.
By Clownkicker
#98263
So do you consider The Republic a "Right" or "Left" source, johnny?
What does Adler say about Trump? Does he believe Trump is competent to be President, or does he have an opinion on that?

My take on Machiavelli is he knew everything there is to know about high officials in "justice" and "law enforcement" conspiring to protect Trump and frame Hillary.
Just who do you think is in power, johnny? Pick up a newspaper that isn't a hundred years old and find out.

To sum up, what johnforbes is trying to tell us say is he hasn't consumed anything currently newsworthy in years.
But he sure yammers a lot about it.
By johnforbes
#98275
No, I consider the Republic a general educational framework for intelligent discussion.

Adler's great books have a great deal to say about Obama and Trump.

Not as specific individuals, of course, but about socialists (Obama) and brash entrepreneurs (Trump).

Come on, Clown, surely you can grasp the point of getting educated on principles in order to apply them to your life?

That is, after all, why schools exist.
By Clownkicker
#98278
johnny, if you had actually read any of those books you would immediately recognize Trump as nothing but a flim flam man, a carny barker who will never tell you the truth and someone who is going to cheat you however he can while he leaves you smiling.

RealTool and namandgulf are the perfect examples of that sort of dimwitted yokel.

But you have no excuse for your blithering nonsense about the man.
Which means we must conclude you are in on the swindle in some way.
By johnforbes
#98281
Come on, Clown, you are making another big mistake.

You are trying to say, if I were as bright/educated as you, I would have the same political opinions.

But I'd be delighted to compare IQ and education with you, yet I have different opinions.

That is how the world works.

"You are trying to say, if I were as bright/educated as you, I would have the same political opinions."-johnfibs

No, I am not. Why do you persist in that simplistic nonsense? I've never believed that, but you can't see a world beyond your narrow mind.

That said, anyone with a brain and even a smidgen of life experience can see that Trump is a con man. You, unlike Insipid and RealTool, presumably have a brain.
Which means you already know Trump is a con man and you don't care. So your ridiculous defense of him can't be motivated by anything good for anyone other than yourself and your friends. Trump is working for you, not America, and that is why your opinions are so conveniently pragmatic and self-serving.

And I would compare IQs but there would be no point. First off, IQs don't mean much. They certainly wouldn't tell us if I were smarter than you or you were smarter than me. I'm hardly surprised someone like you doesn't already know that.
But more than that, everyone, including you, would simply say I was lying, so why waste the energy typing about it?

I have no doubt whatsoever that I compare quite favorably to you, johnny. And I don't need you to "spot me" anything, you arrogant imbecile.

No, dummy, what we know is that the guy who always needs to talk about it doesn't have it.
By johnforbes
#98321
Of course, I agree that IQ alone means little.

Were it otherwise, Ken Jennings would be the most successful person in the world instead of a mere jerk who was hard to beat on "Jeopardy!"

The whole point of life is to make as much as possible of whatever talent or luck you have.

I played basketball a zillion times where some shorter person was a better player but not as tall, so that gave me an advantage I didn't deserve.

On the subject of Trump, he had a father in real estate who gave him a million dollar loan and very valuable experience and framework in building/managing property, but he maximized that and became a multi-billionaire by working 7 days a week, being very goal-oriented, hating to waste time taking a vacation, sleeping only a few hours per night.

Yet CNN still misses the point by trying to snap a pic of Trump golfing as if he is loafing too much. CNN's real problem is that Trump is always thinking, always working, even while playing golf.
By Clownkicker
#98331
No, CNN isn't missing some point catching Trump golfing. It's not to show he's loafing too much, dummy.

Trump used to ridicule and criticize Obama for golfing too much. He told his base that it demonstrated how Obama was lax and incompetent in the job. But now Trump golfs more than Obama ever did.
We should at least judge Trump by his own standards. So it is perfectly valid to catch Trump in another hypocrisy and to point it out.

The trouble with you, johnny, is you're just fine with hypocrisy as long as it's from your own side.
Any ethical person is opposed to it no matter who does it.
By johnforbes
#98333
No, this has been going on since Ike was criticized for golfing too much.

Pelois was recently urging Trump to get more sleep, and there is no loafing more profound than sleeping.

Democrats can't accept their historic 2016 loss, so they have continued their campaign.

And Trump golfing is fundamentally different from Obama because Trump OWNS the golf courses.

Obama wasted a ton of public money flying to Hawaii, but Trump doesn't even take a salary.
By Clownkicker
#98335
Trump never ridiculed Obama for not owning golf courses, dummy.

He ridiculed Obama for golfing.

Merely owning golf courses doesn't suddenly give you a free pass for being a hypocrite.

When we have a President someday who gets rich legally growing marijuana, I guess johnforbes will say the President has an excuse for using weed while President because he owns it himself.
After all, it's "fundamentally different" in that case.

Obama never allowed a meeting or discussion of any type to be scheduled prior to 9am or after 4pm, he like to have a leisurely breakfast without being disturbed.

Trump on the other hand is working by 6am and often doesn't stop until midnight, his staff can't keep up with him.

That's the reason my love for Obama is gone, I was so disappointed that Obama was a slacker and empty suit.
