With 29 percent of precincts reporting, Northam has 50 percent to Gillespie's 49 percent. It is too early to project a winner in the state but CNN's Eric Bradner has called the race for Northam.

The double digit lead was among independents. (51% for Northam vs. 38% for Giullespie)
The polls showed Northam led overall with 51% of the vote....which is essentially what he's getting, within the margin of error.
