A few years ago, I wrote up a report on a childhood neighbor of mine who had been a POW in Germany during WW II.
The POWs did eat grass which they hid in their trouser cuffs while doing railway work.
Such work was forbidden under the Geneva terms, but of course Germany routinely violated them.
Fortunately, this fellow eventually became a RAMP (repatriated allied military personnel), returned home, and lived another half century.
