(CNN)Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators plan to examine the meeting and email exchanges disclosed by Donald Trump Jr. as part of the broader Russian-meddling investigation, according to a US official briefed on the matter.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump's eldest son, Trump Jr., released an email chain showing that he agreed to meet with someone he believed to be a "Russian government attorney" last summer after receiving an email offering him "very high level and sensitive information" that would "incriminate" Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
One email, from publicist Rob Goldstone, claimed the information was part of "Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump." But the Russian attorney, Natalia Veselnitskaya, has denied having ever acted on behalf of the Russian government.

The details of the interactions between Trump Jr., Goldstone and Veselnitskaya weren't fully known to federal investigators until recently, according to three US officials familiar with the probe. The FBI, as part of its counter intelligence probe and the investigation into Russian meddling, has scrutinized some of Donald Trump Jr.'s business dealings and meetings even before the latest meeting was disclosed, one of the US officials said.
Now, Mueller's probe will look at the meeting and email exchanges that Trump Jr. disclosed as part of its investigation, according to the US official briefed on the matter.

Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law, also attended the June 2016 gathering. He recently amended his security clearance forms with the FBI to disclose the existence of the gathering, Kushner's attorneys have said.
A spokesman for the special counsel declined to comment, and an attorney for Trump Jr. didn't respond to a request for comment.

More information leaked out today on Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya.

Veselnitskaya told NBC News on Monday she was not with the Kremlin as was reported by The New York Times.

She confirmed her meeting with Donald Trump Jr. was about Russian adoptions in the US.

The law firm where Veselnitskaya is listed as managing partner, Kamerton Consulting, is based in a Moscow suburb and does not even have a website.

A staff member at Kamerton told The Associated Press Veselnitskaya was unavailable for comment on Monday.

Her office in Moscow may be a shell. There is no working phone, email or website.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that the Kremlin is unaware of a meeting between Trump’s senior staff and Veselnitskaya and “does not know who that is.”

Peskov said,

“No, we don’t know who that is and obviously we can’t monitor all meetings Russian lawyers hold both in Russia and abroad.”

A CNN legal analyst said Tuesday that Donald Trump Jr.'s emails setting up a meeting with a Russian lawyer last year would likely be examined as part of the federal probe into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, but warned against making any conclusions about a possible crime.

"I think this is really going to be one of the most important documents that ... [special counsel Robert] Mueller looks at, who is doing this investigation," said Paul Callan, a former New York homicide prosecutor and media law professor.

"Because it’s the first time we see a clear link to the Russian government in that; the email suggests that this lawyer who’s going to have the meeting has been designated by the Russian government, and that there are official Russian documents," he continued.

Callan, however, warned about simply concluding that "this is criminal as opposed to political stupidity."

"There’s nothing in American law that I’m aware of that would prohibit a candidate from accepting damaging information, even from an enemy foreign government, to use against a political opponent," Callan said.

"And I think it’s absurd to say this could be treason.
