Tom Petruno writes in Kiplinger's of Trump's "surprise" win.

But how many financial journalsts grew up doing agricultural labor? How many of them have broken rock with a 20-pound sledge? How many of them have learned conversational Spanish working along with illegal immigrants?

My point is that journalists very often live and work in a suburban echo chamber, with predictably liberal socioeconomic views and that this outlook can make them "surprised" at a Trump insurgency.

I was not surprised at all, and there were infrastructure and other investment implications which I saw a year ago in all this.

I looked up the background of the journalist who was surprised. He has an undergrad degree and worked for USA Today and the LA Times, both conventionally pro-Democrat publications.   Naturally, he was surprised at Trump's win, but it was no doubt his own experiential naivete which caused surprise.
