American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and Illinois Federation of Teachers President Daniel Montgomery on Friday issued statements assailing Rauner for not passing a budget, calling it “failed leadership.”

“Our country tells students how important college is, but Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner acts contrary to that value. Tonight, because of the governor’s actions, 900 workers at Chicago State University are going home with layoff notices, and 4,000 students are wondering whether they will be able to complete their education. In failing to fund the future of Illinois’ public universities and colleges, Rauner has turned his back on the hard-working people of Illinois, and his policies are taking a particular toll on low-income communities and communities of color,” said Weingarten.

Chicago State U. has about a 4.5-to-1 ratio of students to employees.
The world class University of Washington has roughly 25,000 employees and 54,000 students.
That's just over 2-to-1 ratio of students to employees.

Another world class university, Stanford, has 16,000 students and 12,000 employees.
That's 1.25-to-1.
If anything, Chicago State is sorely understaffed.

So explain to us what you think is an appropriate ratio of students to employees that insures a first-rate education to the students.

That's less than 2-to-1 ratio of students to employees.

The pupil/teacher ratio in public schools in 1955 was 26.9 students per teacher, 95% graduated on time. Well the educators convinced the public if they lowered the pupil/teacher ratio kids by hiring tons of more staff and teachers, the kids would become even smarter; well we've seen how that turned out. The average high school graduate today can't pass tests that 6th graders were taking in 1955.

It's time to slash schools and put the remaining staff back to teaching. There needs to be an "up or out" program in all public schools...and I'm not talking about the students.

The article you posted says nothing about student/teacher ratios at Chicago State.
Most likely the ratios there are similar to what you posted in most classes, if not worse.
And your student/teacher numbers are from elementary schools in 1955, not universities, and they don't include all the other employees it takes to run a school. They are not the same thing, dimwit.

Any person with an IQ above 90 knows it takes more than teachers to make a university run.

Chicago State is already running with an inadequate staff relative to most good Universities, and you want to cut it further.
That only proves you want to further destroy the public college system, not improve it.

Well, if you had attended a university you would know that professors teach at universities, teachers teach in grade school. I recall being in lecture halls were we often had over a 100 students yet the ration of university employees to students was 1 for every four students. To support that one professor the school had a staff of 25 employees...that's the problem get it now?

A huge portion of the instructors at public universities are not "professors" at all. Lower and mid-level level classes are often taught by grad students or other non-professor teachers.

Most classes for undergraduates are taught by graduate students working on their Masters....

And you will find that even so called "professors" are there working on their PhDs and are in the

classroom "teaching" in order to have access to students work(research papers,etc)...work that

they then claim as their own to get their PhDs.

The professors that do already have PhDs are more likely there working on their own projects and are

not accessible to the lowly undergraduate students....not even at Harvard.

I had a surprising number of full professors teach my 100 and 200 level classes.
(My English 101 writing prof had an eidetic memory. I went back 20 years later and asked about a paper I wrote and she remembered both the paper and me vividly. Trust me, it wasn't because the paper was memorable.)
