Clinton has repeatedly denied sending or receiving any classified information on her personal account.

However, the inspectors general wrote in a subsequent memo last week that "several" of Clinton's emails contained classified intelligence information. A Justice Department official confirmed that they have "received criminal referrals."

Clinton presidential campaign spokesman Nick Merrill issued a statement early Friday denying that Clinton had handled classified materials inappropriately. He explained that due to the massive amount email Clinton received it would have been impossible for her to be aware of which ones may have been classified and that only Clinton had access to the information on her server.

The Sec of State deals every day with sensitive info, and surely that was on her home server (i.e., not properly secured).

Then, in violation of the law, she used a private server, then on her own motion deleted 32,000 email knowing full well that Congress wanted that email for a legit reason -- to investigate Benghazi, the IRS scandal, etc.

The State Department investigation has already concluded Hillary's server had/has classified documents on it, that alone should have prompted a seizer of the server to protect classified information getting into the wrong hands. Turning into over to the DOJ to wash their hands of it, doesn't absolve the State Department from their responsibilities to everything they can to secure classified information they know is a private citizen's home.

There should also be an investigation into the DOJ for abetting Hillary's crimes by failure to follow upon known criminal offensive after they've been officially notified and requested to investigate.

Clinton said on Saturday she had "no idea" what were the emails mentioned in the letter.

McCullough's letter said a sampling of 40 of about 30,000 emails sent or received by Clinton found at least four that contained information the government had classified as secret.

The information was classified at the time that the emails were sent, McCullough said.

Classified emails on Hillary Clinton's personal server, and a back-up copy on a thumb drive held by her lawyer David Kendall, are violations of the U.S. code governing the unlawful removal and storage of classified information, according to a leading national security lawyer.

"In most situations like this you'd expect that a warrant would be issued and that the Marshals and the feds -- FBI, somebody would go and get that thumb drive and take it somewhere where it would be considered safe by the government," said Edward MacMahon Jr., an attorney who has handled major national security cases including the leak investigation of former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling.

Under 18 USC 1924, the unlawful removal and storage of classified information is described as when a person "knowingly removes such documents or materials without authority and with the intent to retain such documents or materials at an unauthorized location." The law sets punishment of a fine or prison term of "not more than one year."

Attorney General Loretta Lynch responded to growing calls for the DOJ to secure the known classified information. "The inspectors general for the State Department and at least one other IG are reviewing how material was handled," she said. "We will review it as we review all referrals to us and take whatever steps are appropriate, if any."

Clinton's emails came from the National Security Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the National-Geospatial Agency, as well as the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Central Intelligence Agency. Dozens of additional emails released by the State Department Friday were retroactively classified, some as recently as Thursday.

A CIA spokesperson had no public comment, and the ODNI referred calls to the intelligence community inspector general, who could not comment.
