During the conversation with reporters Tuesday morning, Detroit Police Chief James Craig was asked if he would gas up overnight in the city.

"I wouldn't, unless really had to," Craig said. "But I'd be very aware of my surroundings if I had to."

Although he has warned residents to be careful in the past, they were his strongest statements to date about the risks at gas stations in Michigan's largest city after dark. And they came just more than a year after Mayor Mike Duggan asked for an apology from a suburban official who, among other statements, advocated against buying gas in Detroit due to the dangers.

So the Chief, a big black guy in uniform and armed admits he himself wouldn't risk gassing up in Detroit after dark. What a fine city, black leaders who made Detroit what is today must be proud.

It's pretty bad when a police chief is afraid to pump gas at night in his own city.

...When the chief of a major police force says he wouldn't stop at a gas station at night, people are going to take notice.

Chief Craig has stopped in problem gas stations asking them to improve customer safety. One clerk gave Craig a hard time. Two weeks later, a person filling up at the same station was shot at dozens of times.

Meanwhile, the president of the local Food and Petroleum Dealers Association said his group won't accept Detroit gas station membership due to safety.

""For some reason Detroit gas stations do not want to get their act together," he said.

Now that bad when the Petroleum Dealers Association stops accepting gas station memberships due to out of control thugs.
