Here is an old article I came across but it really makes one think. Under Eisenhower, illegal immigration dropped 95% and over 1,000,000 illegals went back to Mexico voluntarily. One point that Eisenhower made was that the illegal immigration problem had an economic side and that you had to decide whether economics triumphed over the law. We keep hearing that you can't send 12 million illegals back to Mexico (or wherever.) Veteran Border Patrol Agents say of course you can.
