WASHINGTON—Vice President Joe Biden ’s son Hunter was discharged from the Navy this year after testing positive for cocaine. Mr. Biden, 44 years old, decided to pursue military service relatively late, beginning the direct-commission process to become a public-affairs officer in the Navy Reserve in 2012. Because of his age—43 when he was to be commissioned—he needed a waiver to join the Navy. He received a second Navy waiver because of a drug-related incident. Mr. Biden was recommended for a direct commission after interviewing with a board of Naval officers, according to the Navy. The direct-commission process was created to allow the Navy to tap civilians with needed skills. The program allows civilians to skip attending the Naval Academy, a reserve-officer training course or officer-candidate school.

Mr. Biden said in a statement that it was “the honor of my life to serve in the U.S. Navy, and I deeply regret and am embarrassed that my actions led to my administrative discharge. I respect the Navy’s decision. With the love and support of my family, I’m moving forward.”

Wasn't he just a military lawyer in some reserve component?
Yep but Biden described him as Naval Combat Officer, the Navy waived all requirements, including a cocaine conviction, made him an Officer without having to attend training and he screwed that up by continuing his cocaine use. Making him a Navy Officer was nothing more than a plan to prep him for political office, he never did one thing in the Navy other than a "public's affairs officer" position he was AWOL from.

Finally, recall our story from May that Joe Biden's son, Hunter, just joined the board of the largest Ukraine gas producer Burisma Holdings. From the press release:

..........R. Hunter Biden will be in charge of the Holdings’ legal unit and will provide support for the Company among international organizations. On his new appointment, he commented: “Burisma’s track record of innovations and industry leadership in the field of natural gas means that it can be a strong driver of a strong economy in Ukraine. As a new member of the Board, I believe that my assistance in consulting the Company on matters of transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion and other priorities will contribute to the economy and benefit the people of Ukraine.”

R. Hunter Biden is also a well-known public figure. He is chairman of the Board of the World Food Programme U.S.A., together with the world’s largest humanitarian organization, the United Nations World Food Programme. In this capacity he offers assistance to the poor in developing countries, fighting hunger and poverty, and helping to provide food and education to 300 million malnourished children around the world.

Company Background:

Burisma Holdings is a privately owned oil and gas company with assets in Ukraine and operating in the energy market since 2002. To date, the company holds a portfolio with permits to develop fields in the Dnieper-Donets, the Carpathian and the Azov-Kuban basins. In 2013, the daily gas production grew steadily and at year-end amounted to 11.6 thousand BOE (barrels of oil equivalent – incl. gas, condensate and crude oil), or 1.8 million m3 of natural gas. The company sells these volumes in the domestic market through traders, as well as directly to final consumers....

Joe Biden got 5 deferments to dodge the draft and avoid Vietnam.

Joe also had to drop out of law school, then leave a presidential race, when he was caught plagiarizing.

So probably Joe told his sons to do some safe reserve service to pad their resumes and prepare for political office.

There is a companion piece on Drudge quoting the NY Post that reports someone shopping around a video of Biden's daughter doing up a line of coke. Seems she was quite the party girl and pot head in college, had trouble keeping her knees together. But let one of the Bush twins pick up a can of Bud light? Alert the media!

In the case of Bush Jr, I would assume he was looking for some honorable way to avoid the draft and Vietnam.

So he went into the Texas Air Guard.

I tried to get into a reserve unit, but didn't have any special connection and there were long lines of others seeking to do precisely what Bush did.

I once did a project which involved, in part, looking at the draft records for the county where I grew up. It was astounding how many people were trying to dodge the draft even during WW II.

Point being: People don't like to leave their jobs, their homes, their families in order to earn little pay for tremendous risk.
