There is significant evidence that the soldier deserted instead of just being taken captive. A member of his unit publicly called for him to be shot for deserting shortly after he disappeared. He sent emails to his parents saying he was ashamed to be an American in the days preceding his disappearance.

I originally thought this was just another stupid act by Obama for a photo op, but now I suspect it may be more heinous motives.

CNN just reported that Army warned the White House not to release the Terrorists for this guy's release since he was a Taliban sympathizer, the day he deserted the Army picked up radio transmissions where he was trying to make contact with the Taliban while hiding out from soldiers looking for him in a local village. Even with this knowledge the White House ignored laws and in secret released 5 top terrorist leaders for an identified Taliban sympathizer... then sent Susan Rice before the media to call him a hero who served with distinction. No one is a stupid as Obama is pretending to be in this matter.
