Russian President Vladimir Putin phoned his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, on Friday to discuss the tenuous situation in Ukraine -- the latest exchange between two leaders who have been at loggerheads about what's happened and what should happen next.

According to the White House, Putin called to talk about an American proposal "for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis" and the two presidents agreed that their respective top diplomats "would meet to discuss next steps."

The back-and-forth also gave Obama the opportunity to express, as he's done repeatedly in recent week, his opposition to what he described as Russia's taking over of Crimea, which just a few weeks ago was part of Ukraine. He also raised concerns about a reported massing of Russian troops near the border, which has raised fear of further incursions.

"President Obama made clear that this remains possible only if Russia pulls back its troops and does not take any steps to further violate Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty," the White House said.

I hope they'll find a solution but all that Obama being weak talk will have to end if this is successful.

Giving in to Putin's demands is success for Putin. The White House refuses to tell the American people what Obama has been offered Putin to stop the invasion, you can bet it will cost us dearly...that is far from punishing Putin for his actions, it's actually rewarding him and will encourage more such actions in the future from not only Putin but other countries.

Look at Assad, Obama drew a red line and Assad crossed the red line, what happened next is amazing, Assad was immediately sent a billion dollars by Obama, Obama then stopped demanding Assad step down and Assad's position is stronger than ever...as he continues to slaughter women and children. The deadline for Assad to turn over 100% of his chemical weapons passed 2 months ago, less than 5% has been turned over, Assad demanded another billion dollars after the deadline passed, the White House refuses to say whether the US has paid the 2nd billion dollars.

Putin learned from that, thus the invasion and now comes the reward from Obama.

Obama and the EU aren't giving into Putin terms. They were the ones who started it I'm sure hope they'll be able to talk down all this.. Sure I'd expect Crimea to be gone but I don't think the people of Ukraine care much about it anyway they hate the Russian speaking people anyway.

If the international community agrees to let Russia keep Crimea after invading it as part of any agreement Putin wins big time. Any agreement has to include returning to the border prior to the invasion. My big concern is it sounds like Obama is going to reward Russia for their bad behavior in an attempt to keep them from doing more bad behavior, all that does is insure future bad behavior.

Russia has had a Military Base there for 200 years 60% of the people there speak Russian and believe their ties are with Russia not Ukraine. When this so called government took over the first law they changed was to make Ukraine the official government language outlawing the Russian language..

No, Russia didn't invade anything they used the troops that were already there on their base now they took control because John McCain went over and destabilized the government causing the people to overthrow the democratically elected government The EU and NATO have been pushing Russia more and more making all those old countries which were apart of Russia part of NATO pinching Russia and forcing their hand. Like Russia did to Kennedy when they tried to put missiles in Cuba. We didn't like it and we reacted then now NATO is pushing on Russia backdoor and they are pushing back also.

So why isn't Obama and Kerry offering McCain something rather than Putin?

The EU can't stand up to Putin; they need his energy supplies.

Obama couldn't even whip up enthusiasm for a strike on Syria, and nobody in their right mind would be blind to the enormous risk of America's already-exhausted and too small military trying to do anything about Russia.

Even the editorial board of the liberal Washington Post said Obama's foreign policy was based on "fantasy."

Putin will likely get the ethnic Russian part of Ukraine too before long.
