The Obama administration, in what’s been called an egregious slap in the face to the Vatican, has announced plans to shut down the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See.

It’s a “massive downgrade of U.S.-Vatican ties,” said former U.S. Ambassador James Nicholson. “It’s not just those who bomb churches and kill Catholics in the Middle East who are our antagonists, but it’s also those who restrict our religious freedoms and want to close down our embassy to the Holy See,” he said in the National Catholic Reporter. “[There’s no] diplomatic or political benefit to the United States. Obama's announcement reflects a open hostility toward the Catholic Church. ”

“It’s another manifestation of the antipathy of this administration both to Catholics and to the Vatican — and to Christians in the Middle East. First of all, the U.S. has no trade, military, aid, or even tourist issues to deal with with the Vatican.
If the Obama set up a second embassy in Saudi Arabia or Iran with some Ayatollah, you clowns would have a fit.

That said, all the affairs previously dealt with in the Vatican embassy are simply moved down the road to our other Italian Embassy in Rome. Nothing changes except we don't waste money on a second Embassy.

I know that the U.S. didn't see the need for an embassy at the Vatican for 200 years.
But if the embassy is purely symbolic as you suggest, then it should piss off all the other christian sects no end and all non-Catholic Americans because it would walk the line of establishing a state religion, one that is singled out for special treatment and recognition.

The Vatican is an internationally recognized independent state, it's has the ears of billions of Christians around the world, there is no important embassy to the United States than the one Obama is closing...his reasoning, it'll save $1.4 million dollars a year. Less than it cost to throw a part at the White House, less than it costs tax payers to send Obama's daughter to New York clothes shopping. Obama is closing the embassy as a show of support to Muslim Countries, bottom line.
