Political discussions about everything

When we lambast the Dems or GOP for this mess we have in Congress, it might be wise to examine how we got here. When we do we find that everyone's hands are a bit dirty. Somewhere along the line the main job of Congress became getting reelected. The business of the people has become second place unless it helps to get reelected. Both sides argue that our spending priorities are wrong, though each side has a different arguement. A quick look at how we gor here is in order.

1. Social Security-Ah, look at that huge pile of money that is there for the taking. Ever since FDR passed the SS act, Congress has viewed the SS fund as their piggy bank. Right now, Congress owes the SS fund over 2 trillion dollars. Last year Congress paid $110 billion in interest to the SS fund. Most in Congress feel that Congress will not and should not ever pay back that borrowed money. So...the way to settle the debt is to abolish SS.

2. The Prescription Drug Plan-What a wonderful thing Congress (Bush) did for the American people. But...the bill was not funded with even one penny. On top of that; Congress put in the bill that it is a criminal offense for any government employee to attempt to negotiate drugs prices to government agencies. Since the drug companies are almost sure to get paid (with your money), drug prices have gone through the roof. Some drugs have been repackaged and sold as new drugs at higher prices.

3. The tax breaks for the richest taxpayers-Congress (Bush) decided that the rich needed more money so they reduced the tax rate on the wealthest of the wealthy. Once again, the money that was lost by this bill was not replaced by other funding.

4. The Iraq War-Once again Congress didn't do their job and require funding for this unnecessary war. We borrowed the money to fund the war. Not only did we fight the war with borrowed money, we also have to pay huge amounts of money in interest on the boorowed money.

5. The Afgan War-Repeat-Once again Congress didn't do their job and require funding for this unnecessary war. We borrowed the money to fund the war. Not only did we fight the war with borrowed money, we also have to pay huge amounts of money in interest on the boorowed money.

6. The War On Terror-This money has come from the general fund plus huge amounts of borrowed money. This "War" has been extremely costly and promises to go on for many more years.

7. The Crisis Of 2008-Although government tells us that the bialout has been paid back; the reality is that the money was originally borrowed and the interest is still being paid by the taxpayers. The many side effects of the crisis are still with us; unemployment, poverty, deterioration of infrastructure, etc.
