My position on Iraq would require a person to have an IQ above 100 to understand.
No, I wouldn't have invaded, and said that many times. And said it in more important places than this mudpit.
It isn't absolutely essential for a president to have combat experience to go to war. But it helps to grasp the import.
Also, the situation in Iraq was very different, with world intel agencies universally saying Saddam had WMDs. And he did have them. We know that because he used them against his own people. What happened to them? Were they few in number? Moved? Nobody knows, just as nobody knows the situation in Syria.
I've never been a Powell fan. All along, he was promoted early for three reasons. He was a pretty sharp customer, but he was also promoted based on Political Correctness and on being nominally in the same party as his mentors. However, just as soon as Obama ran, Powell instantly started supporting Obama and his positions. Conveniently, that came at a time when Powell's mentors could no longer promote him to bigger jobs.
Combat experience is never irrelevant to the decision whether your command consigns some kid to die. That is true whether it is Air Force only from a distance or a close quarters fight.
Going into the Guard to avoid the draft, or enlisting, these are time-tested and honorable ways. Kerry enlisted in the Navy because he knew he would be drafted.
My uncle was a college student about to be drafted in WW II. He decided not to wait and instead enlisted in the Marines, where with the 5th he landed on Red Beach. Eventually, he saw the flag raised over Iwo Jima.
Bush Jr was more honorable because he did expose himself to some military risk by being a pilot. My pal Bill flew out of Udorn in Thailand during the war. If you've ever taken a joy ride with a really good military pilot, you'll know it is a risky business.
One other thing which make Obama's adventure into Syria fail was this: His notion came about at a time when everybody in America had 10 years of experience with Iraq and Afghanistan.
