BELCHERTOWN (CBS) – Shortly after midnight Tuesday, seven people were caught trespassing at the United States' Largest Public Water Reservoir.

State Police say the five men and two women are immigrants from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, and “cited their education and career interests” for being in the area. Police have learned they are chemical engineers and recent college graduates.

The Quabbin, in Belchertown, is one of the country’s largest man-made public water supplies. Boston’s drinking water comes from the Quabbin and the Wachusett Reservoirs.

State Police say there were no warrants or advisories on any of the individuals.

All seven were allowed to leave and will be summonsed to court for trespassing. The FBI is investigating and routine checks of public water supplies have been increased following the incident.

The seven individuals currently live in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland, Northampton and New York City. Police have not released their names because a court date has not been set.

Since then all the reservoirs around here have been instrumented with full time chemical analyzers. We have never been safer than in the last couple years.

Such research is not new, and other characteristics that are relevant to an agent's potential as a biological weapon include the agent's stability in the drinking water system, virulence, culturability in the quantity required, and resistance to detection and identification processes . CDC is also stockpiling antidotes and vaccines, has established a disease surveillance network in hospitals and other health care facilities to detect and identify unusual unexplained illnesses, and is working with public and private laboratories to facilitate the detection and identification of biological agents in the event of a terrorist attack upon our water supply.

Also consider the attack on our water is detected, in this case 20 million people would be without water from that supply for years, say they hit 10 locations, even if it's detected we're back in the middle ages.

American citizens are free to trespass? Based upon their backgrounds, the location they were at, the time they were there and lack of ability to explain what they were doing their...they should be behind bars until "thorough" investigations including searches are conducted. If the investigation and searches turn up nothing they should then be escorted to the airport, placed on airplanes home.

Their student visa's are privilege extended by the United States, not rights! No one from another Country has a "right" to come to our Country and study here.

Second government agents have conducted risk based assessments of various threats. Arab college student looking for screw around on the lake is one issue. Checking out the fence line around the pumping station is another issue.

what trigger an investigation? maybe the fact that they all come from different countries n in the middle east and know each other, for one. They all got together and trespassed at same time means they have a common plan. The police didn't questioned them because they are chemical engineers, they questioned them because they were trespassing. Fishing permits? I know of no fishing permit that gives anyone the right to trespass.
