How to Power the World without Fossil Fuels

Mark Jacobson says he can run the planet solely on wind, water and solar energy. First stop: New York State

By Mark Fischetti

New York State could end fossil-fuel use and generate all of its energy from wind, water and solar power, according to Mark Jacobson. Image: Graphic by Karl Burkart

Three times now, Mark Jacobson has gone out on the same limb. In 2009 he and co-author Mark Delucchi published a cover story in Scientific American that showed how the entire world could get all of its energy—fuel as well as electricity—from wind, water and solar sources by 2030. No coal or oil, no nuclear or natural gas. The tale sounded infeasible—except that Jacobson, from Stanford University, and Delucchi, from the University of California, Davis, calculated just how many hydroelectric dams, wave-energy systems, wind turbines, solar power plants and rooftop photovoltaic installations the world would need to run itself completely on renewable energy.

WOW, the Government should transfer a 50 billion to his bank account. But wait, if he really can run the planet solely on wind, why wouldn't private investors be willing to invest in him, they would make 100 return on investment??? Me smell rat.

LOL, two morons respond. They, yet again, prove nothing but their status as morons.
Bilbo if you really think this guy can do what he claims he can do, back it up and "invest" your life savings with him. Go for it dude, many will and in less than a year, he'll be closing down shop walking away from you and everyone else who gave him money for his retirement fund in some exotic island.

Yes, dildo...

You can get in on the ground floor. I'm certain your life savings -- 5 figures (if you include those right of the decimal point) will get this dude well on the way to revolutionizing the world.

My guess is your considerable hot air would help more. The wind power thingie. You know, the stuff that is being built with government subsidy and then promptly shutting down as soon as that runs out because it is just not competitive/economical.

There is a huge gap in knowing that something can be done and making it happen. The general rule is that the inventor and entrepreneur usually goes bankrupt and the second or third generation makes a shitload of money. When I pitched the smart phone to my company they said it couldn't be done, and they were right within the limited horizon they took. Their failure was to not take the longer, slower path.

There are indeed entrepreneurs. They say they have a solution to global warming, they get investors to give them their savings. They then hire a few people with huge promises of profit sharing once they get on their feet, just trust him, they lease property then they go the Government and do their alternative energy pitch, they receive multi millions in Government subsidies. The entrepreneur then disperses the money into several accounts, announces he's declaring bankruptcy leaving his employees broke, leases on land an property unpaid and all investor including the Government shit out of luck. They have gotten so brazen lately that the whole cycle is often happening within 4 or 5 months of receiving the Government handouts. Over the last two years the Obama Administration has written off over 80 Billion dollars in subsidies for these alternative energy start ups by these "enterpreneurs"

So Bilbo, until you hand this entrepreneur your savings don't ask me to give him any of my tax money.

Spoken like a true regressive. A stance that has always lead to stifling progress and the welfare of the people as well as stifling economic growth and profit. No investment, no return. Guaranteed return, a simple lie that leads to no profit.

Why are YOU STIFLING PROGRESS by not giving him your money?
#22122
Fuck off liar leroy. Where did I ever say we should ever do what he says without any review or control?

Or

Just keep proving you status as a disho9nest, dishonorable twisting liar who will imply anything to propagate your anti0-social feelings and agenda on others. Which is all you really ever do.

There you go, someone calls your information out and your belief, and you say that their position is standing in the way of progress, then you attack me for calling you out for not investing in it....

You're a sad little, violent natured, hypocrite.

That all sounds great Bilbo. But what do you do when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing? Battery power?
New York can have some long cold winters. And many places are worse.

Also, I don't see how mining precious metals and manufacturing and disposal of batteries and solar panels is any less harmful than fossil fuels. I have been very interested in wind and solar power, mostly wind, since I have a farm with frontage on the Albemarle Sound. Lots of sunny days, and very little shade. Also, the wind off of the water never stops.

My grandmother used to say that people use more energy than they should. She also said there are too many people in the world.

Crazy huh?

And that's the point, neither Solar Electric or Wind Electric are viable in most areas of the country - not to mention the massive ecological damage in making solar panels and batteries to store the electrical charge to power during weak or no generation periods.

I looked at going off-grid, for my 2900KW per month it was going to cost over $150k to be able to ensure 100% off grid and maintain full power. On the brighter side, I've cut my power load down to about 2000kw/month by virtializing servers and switching to LED lighting everywhere, but it would still be over $100k to build a 100% off-grid system, and then the payback is not there, assuming a 25 year life, but we all know that the batteries have to be changed several times during that 25 year span.

Intermediate storage has n=long been a major problem. Solutions have been becoming much more viable.

Then there are ignorant malevolent morons like liar leroy, et al who simply want no progress and to bitch and moan at everyone's expense. The heart of his stream of comments. A fringe disenfranchised extremist moron capable of anything. We have seen what people like liar leroy can do this past week.
#22587
Whoever said that solar or wind energy has to be used 100% of the time?

How about a hybrid form of energy supply? Using sun and wind when available and have natural gas kick in when when sun and wind are unavailable.

No, storage solutions have NOT become "MUCH" more viable. The cost of batteries has been increasing because their manufacture causes so much environmental damage and contributes to "Man-Caused" global warming (according to the idiots that believe that lie).....

My Statement above, on the viability, is fact, and it's based on 2012 data, since I spent months getting bids/quotes as well as doing the research myself. Solar Electric and Wind power is not viable for Off-Grid for the modern family in more than 50% of the United States.
