When President Barack Obama released five Taliban commanders from the Guantanamo Bay prison in exchange for an American deserter in 2014, he assured a wary public that the dangerous enemy combatants would be transferred to Qatar and kept from causing any trouble in Afghanistan.

In fact, they were left free to engineer Sunday’s sacking of Kabul.

Soon after gaining their freedom, some of the notorious Taliban Five pledged to return to fight Americans in Afghanistan and made contacts with active Taliban militants there. But the Obama-Biden administration turned a blind eye to the disturbing intelligence reports, and it wasn’t long before the freed detainees used Qatar as a base to form a regime in exile.

RELEASED FROM AFGHAN PRISONS BY TRUMP, THEY HELPED THE FALL OF AFGHANISTAN

Under Trump-- "Feb. 29, 2020 — U.S. and Taliban sign an agreement that sets the terms for a U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan by May 1, 2021, but do not release two classified annexes that set the conditions for U.S. withdrawal. At the time of the agreement, the U.S. had about 13,000 troops in Afghanistan, according to a Department of Defense inspector general report.

The pact includes the release of 5,000 Taliban fighters who have been held prisoners by the Afghanistan government, which is not a party to the agreement.

March 10, 2020 — Under pressure from [Trump] the U.S., Ghani orders the release of 1,500 Taliban prisoners, but at the rate of 100 per day.

May 19, 2020 — In releasing its quarterly report on Afghanistan, the DOD inspector general’s office says the U.S. cut troop levels in Afghanistan by more than 4,000, even though “the Taliban escalated violence further after signing the agreement.”

Sept. 3, 2020 — Afghanistan releases the final 400 Taliban prisoners, as required under the U.S.-Taliban agreement, clearing the way for intra-Afghan peace talks to begin.

Nov. 17, 2020 — Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller formally announces that the U.S. [Trump] will reduce U.S. forces in Afghanistan to 2,500 by Jan. 15, 2021.

Jan. 15 — “Today, U.S. force levels in Afghanistan have reached 2,500,” Miller, the acting defense secretary, says in a statement. “[T]his drawdown brings U.S. forces in the country to their lowest levels since 2001.”

Afghanistan’s First Vice President Amrullah Saleh tells the BBC that the Trump administration made too many concessions to the Taliban. “I am telling [the United States] as a friend and as an ally that trusting the Taliban without putting in a verification mechanism is going to be a fatal mistake,” Saleh says, adding that Afghanistan leaders warned the U.S. that “violence will spike” as the 5,000 Taliban prisoners were released. “Violence has spiked,” he added."

Does johnny really think five prisoners released from Gitmo by Obama can begin to compare to the thousands of fighters released by Trump inside Afghanistan? If just five prisoners released from Gitmo are so dangerous, imagine what johnforbes actually thinks of the thousands released by Trump.

Why does johnforbes leave out these little details that show that Trump was the one who made the agreements and withdrew most of our troops from Afghanistan and released the most prisoners? Is he ashamed of those facts but simply lacks the balls to admit it? <---(Rhetorical question, as always. We already know the answer. That's why it is so easy for johnny to pass as a woman in his drag persona. There is nothing he needs to tuck inside his panties.)

Elkin, you've got to stop with that silly talking point from long ago.

If you strive to become rich, your path will not be direct or easy.

That's the reason you, Elkin, are poor and Trump is a billionaire.

He tried many ways to make money, some did, some did not, and that is what happens to all of us who invest, or are entrepreneurs.

Sure, I was born tall, handsome, athletic, and utterly charming, but not affluent. The latter was on me.
#131742
No, Trump won what Buffett called the ovarian lottery.

Same as all of us did.

He was born in a country which favored entrepreneurs, and he got many advantages from his father and family, including good IQ and a Wharton education and doubtless much training and help in real estate.

As Newton said, we all stand on the shoulders of giants.

Of course, in Elkin's case, he stands on the shoulders of Ruth Buzzi.
#131743
Notice johnforbes was too chickenshit to address Trump's release of 5000 Taliban fighters in Afghanistan orTrump's deal to reduce U.S. troop troop levels to 2500 remaining when Biden took over. But johnny still blames Biden for the troop reductions Trump made the deal over.

johnforbes pisses his panties over 5 prisoners released by Obama but couldn't care less about 5000 prisoners released by his guy Trump. Always the partisan hypocrite...
#131744
Too obvious to mention, but the US should have departed Agghanistan 19 years ago.

Doesn't everybody now realize that?

But you leave in a sequence as Trump said:

1) American citizens, translators, etc out

2) Weapons and equipment not left unless no other choice.

3) Destroy airports or whatever could be used by the Taliban, ISIS, or AQ

4) Soldiers, airmen leave

Milley, Blinken, Sullivan...they should all resign.
#131745
Yes, johnny, if only Trump had done any of those things.

1) He left American citizens and translators in country. They are now paying the price.

2) He left $82 billion (he bragged about it) in equipment in Afghanistan to be used against us.

3) He did not destroy anything significant before he pulled out our troops.

Who cares what "Trump [allegedly] said." Look at what he actually did, and for once criticize his poor judgment and execution.
#131750
Should every president have left over the prior 19 yrs? Yes.

But the catastrophe falls on Austin, General Thoroughly Modern Milley, Blinken, the silly Rhodes Scholar Sullivan, and senile Joe.

Even CNN and ABC can't apologize for this gross display of incompetence.

Today -- yes, even now -- America has the power to stabilize this mess and stop the Taliban flow inward.

But this will be in the history books as Joe's ignominious defeat in Afghanistan.

I feel sorry for the soldiers who fought and sweated there, and now watch their efforts thrown in the trash by morons.
#131751
Once again johnforbes tries to place blame on anyone but Trump who didn't prepare for the troop draw down but merely reduced troop levels and released 5000 Taliban fighters without doing any of things johnforbes himself said should have been done at the same time.

Trump intentionally set up this disaster and then handed it off to Biden.

There is one big difference here between Biden and Trump-- Biden takes responsibility for his decisions and Trump always blamed somebody else, just as johnforbes is blaming someone else for Trump's disastrous actions in Afghanistan.

That refusal to ever take responsibility for his mistakes is something that greatly appeals to johnforbes since it is the foundation of all of his political beliefs, as well as the politics of all Republicans. It is always someone else's fault.
That's why you always find johnforbes pointing his finger somewhere else whenever he's caught in another lie or another hypocrisy, just as he's doing now.

johnforbes knows perfectly well that the Taliban was going to take over again no matter when we left. He supported Trump when Trump was turning the country over to the Taliban. johnforbes supported the deals Trump made releasing 5000 Taliban fighters. But now johnforbes is pretending Biden has made some tremendous error in doing exactly what Trump was doing, only it's bad now because Biden is doing it. Biden is just the last guy stuck holding the hot potato, so, since Biden is Democrat, that makes him the easy target of the simplistically-minded partisan johnforbes to blame for everyone else's mistakes.

Retreats are dangerous and must be handled well, and that is true for any general or president.

Here, there a 19-year record of dumb things like push gender equality and other forms of Political Correctness out at the Afghans.

In his superb book, Street Without Joy, Fall asked why Special Forces from the US and France were needed in the first and second Indochina wars and the answer was the lack of popularity of the non-indigenous folks.

But it fell to Biden, and he did NOT follow Trump's exit plan for some unknown reason, and the result was global humiliation for America.

I remember the feeling in April 1975 of watching refugees stream down the old Rue sans Joie, and realize the entire effort had been defunded.

I feel sorry for the young soldiers who wanted to try to bring Afghanistan into the modern world, end terrorism, educate women, and create a stable and less tribal "country."

The incompetence of Biden, Milley, Blinken, Austin, etc has been enormous and even CNN and ABC can't hide it.

Well Trump is claiming that Biden didn't follow his plan. Just remember Trump's modus operandi.

If it is successful...then take credit.

If it fails....blame someone else.

And to place everything into perspective. Not a single American has died in Afghanistan in the past week or so. Now how many Americans have died in Florida and Texas in the past week or so from COVID-19 to win political points...thousands?

Conservative lies and thousands died...........

"No plan -- from Trump or anybody else -- could be as spectacularly dumb as "woke" generals Lloyd Austin and Mark Milley came up with.

I don't know, johnny.

Trump's implemented plan to release 5000 Taliban fighters from prison to take over the country and make an orderly withdrawal by the U.S. impossible is pretty spectacularly dumb.

Someone here even started a whiny thread about how dumb releasing prisoners was. Maybe you can recall who that was?
#131814
Who can recall every brilliant thread on this fine forum?

However, I do remember that Obama let 5 Taliban commanders go free and they were supposed to remain in Qatar.

They apparently orchestrated from there the Taliban takover which revealed the vaunted 300,000-man Afghan military to be a paper tiger which folded more quickly than one of Clownslacker's arguments.
#131820
And Trump's implemented plan to reduce troop levels from 13,500 to 2,500 when he left office, leaving the Afghan Army unsupported in their fight against the Taliban as they swept through Afghanistan with Trump's gift of 5000 additional fighters was also pretty spectacularly dumb.

And the fact that Trump hadn't even begun to withdraw $83 billion in weapons from Afghanistan with only four months before his agreed upon exit date was also spectacularly dumb.
#131832
"Come on, Joe has been president all year."-johnfibs

Biden has been president for seven months, not a year, dimwit. Get out of your conservative time warp.

"There was a withdrawal plan, but Biden decided to cancel it..."-johnfibs

Biden didn't "cancel" anything, dummy. He was stuck carrying out the fucked up plan Trump had negotiated with the Taliban. Biden made the best of a foregone disaster.

Trump announced a withdrawal date, which Republicans have ALWAYS criticized as foolish. johnforbes thought this was just fine when Trump did it. Not a peep of criticism from hypocritejohnny. Trump then released 5000 Taliban fighters from prison months BEFORE our withdrawal so they would be ready to make Biden look bad when they overran the country as we left. Trump ran on getting out of Afghanistan. He had four years to do it. But he didn't do it before the election because it would have made him look bad because everyone knew there was no way to leave without a shit storm following in its wake. Once again this is simply Trump and johnforbes refusing to take responsibility for Trump's four-year fuck up.
#131846
johnforbes is honestly here claiming Trump could have evacuated $83 billion in "helicopters, guns, etc" in four months with only 2500 troops to do it and also hold off the Taliban as they swept across the country.

THAT was Trump's plan.

Then he expects us to take his opinions seriously.

What a fucking imbecile.
#131852
No, I said nothing of the sort.

Biden has been president all year, and those arms could have and should have been moved or destroyed.

You do NOT leave 85 billion in armament (e.g., 600,000 light weapons) in the hands of terrorists.

Do NOT ever mention trying to limit the Second Amendment ever again if you think giving AQ and ISIS and the Taliban 600 thousand weapons is just dandy.
