I've found that it's very dangerous to try and figure out our overnment...it makes you crazy. I was on a government site and it mentioned the Department of Energy. Now I really have little understanding of what it is that they really do so I investigated a bit.
It seems that the DOE has spent 100s of billions of dollars since it was created during the Carter administration (8/04/1977). It now has an annual budget of 24 billion dollars and has 16,000 employees. It was created to decrease our dependence on foreign oil. How has that mission panned out?
In 1977 we imported 30% of our oil; the figure is now bouncing around 70%. DOE has become a training ground for future lobbyists and energy industry consultants. Several scandals have plagued the agency recently. The American public has very little knowledge of what the DOE does.
Warning: We have turned over our healthcare, auto industry and banking sustem to that same government.
Opinion: If Congress created a position to have one person check on the weather each morning, in 10 years you would find that a new agency has been created hiring 24,000 employees. (The Department of Checking on the Weather)
