No, the modern Supreme Court is just a political body.

Thus, I would not oppose Clownslacker's nomination to fill one of the liberal seats.

Look at Sotomayor, who had standard speech material praising herself for her accidents of gender and ethnicity, and claiming they gave her special insight -- i.e., she was nominated because of her sexist and racist views.

Now, as to the Court generally, the Marbury case revealed that it was all about power, and no less a luminary than Frankfurter said in the Harvard Law Review that the reasoning therein was -- as he so politely put it -- not "impeccable."
