UN warns it is 'running out of cash' in urgent appeal to members. UNITED NATIONS – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the U.N. is running out of money and is urging members to pay up amid a looming financial crisis for the international body.
Secretary-General spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters Thursday that the issue is “late payments and payments not yet received to the regular budget.” “Late payment has an impact obviously on our cash flow. It may have an impact on our ability to deliver mandates,” he said.
While the administration has been eyeing carefully its payments to various U.N. funds and agencies, the U.S. has not yet reduced or delayed its payments to the budget. Dujarric refused to name the countries who are late on payments but confirmed the United States isn't one of them.
Trump Tweeted that the UN could significantly reduce their budget by billions if they were just to move their operations HQ's from New York City which is among the most costly in the world, to a less expensive location to operate out of. "You put over 50,000 UN people taking up several city blocks in one of the world's most expensive cities and then wonder why your operating budget costs so much. As long as the United States is picking up most of those costs, why the hell do they care?"
