I had to chuckle the other night when I heard that the Trump base is calling for him to be given the Nobel Prize for getting North Korea to the bargaining table.
Let's look at a few facts. Pennsylvania (46055 sq. mi) is close to the size of North Korea (46539 sq. mi.) During the last nuke test in North Korea the mountain under which they fired off the nukes collapsed making it unusable for any tests in the future. It is unknown if there is any radiation leakage from the collapse. Due to the size of North Korea there is no other place for nuke tests without a major construction project with massive expenditures which would bankrupt North Korea. It is believed that North Korea doesn't have the technology to put nukes on ballistic missiles at this time. Naturally this means that no North Korean nukes will hit the USA in the near future. Without testing the ability to put nukes on missiles is problematic.
The sanctions are working. The UN has passed 8 resolutions calling for the member countries to impose sanctions on North Korea. The USA, Australia, Japan, The European Union and (to a lesser extent,-some petroleum products) China are the main countries that have imposed sanctions.
The above facts are the reason that Kim wants to meet. He has to. North Korea is still a huge threat even without a missile armed with a nuke to hit the USA. The North Korean Army is estimated to be 950,000 strong. In a war with North Korea, significant casualties would be suffered by South Korea, the USA, Australia and probably Japan.
