Tom Cotton Denies GOP Letter Undermines Iran Nuclear Talks

After leading the charge on an open letter to the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran about the ongoing nuclear negotiations, Sen. Tom Cotton rebutted criticism from the White House and Democrats that the message undermines U.S. negotiators working toward a deal.

"It's the job of the president to negotiate but it's the job of Congress to approve," Cotton, R-Arkansas, said in an interview with ABC News in his office this afternoon. "We're simply trying to say that Congress has a constitutional role to approve any deal, to make sure that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon. Not today, not tomorrow, not ten years from now."

President Obama said it is "somewhat ironic" to see some congressional Republicans "wanting to make common cause with the hardliners in Iran."

"It's an unusual coalition," Obama observed.

Iran this afternoon. Despite the rain, the weather was a pleasant shift from the brutal cold of "global warming."

As to the letter to Iran, it is a reminder that Obama should follow advice and consent.

Instead, Obama has again wiped his feet on the Constitution.

Generally speaking, when you break the law, it's not a good idea to get it in writing...

Senators who reached out to Iran’s leaders to undermine President Barack Obama’s nuclear negotiations probably broke the law, and they're going to get away with it.

The law they probably broke, the Logan Act of 1799, allows for fines and up to three years in prison.

The act bans U.S. citizens from engaging “without authority of the United States” in “correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government ... with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government ... in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States.”

Fortunately for Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and the 46 Senate co-signers of his open letter to Iran, the law is not enforced and is likely unconstitutional.
