Don't know why they can't go live with something, even if its just a section, then update with the new features on an as going basis. That's why they should have a server for development and testing, and then one as their go live site. It's best to get the site up now, and work on the new features moving forward. Instead, it's let's rebuild everything and also build in all the new features and areas, then go live. Poor decision making in my opinion.

Actually 2 at a time, with weeks of preplanning.

It's easy to rebuild if you know in advance that you are going to have to.

I'll tell you this one. If I had people banging on my door that I left high and dry, I would put an army of people rebuilding it.

This site had over 12 years of faithful members ( Iam one of them) Who one day show up and the doors are locked.

How long do you really think they are going to stick around before finding some place else to go, ask yourself the same question while your at it.

What's hurt you so far is the promises to re-launch and not make the date. If you don't know then state that, but making promises you can't keep is making you look foolish.

Good luck in this but its more than apparent you really don't know.

You really have to wonder about their computer experience when they come out and say 4 to 7 days to get restarted and the way it looks now it's going to be 30 days instead.

That's one of the few things written here that I am 100% certain is correct. I expect this is written with PHP, probably two versions old, not OOP, tons of security holes purposely opened to keep reverse compatibility. The database is probably mySQL optimized for 2005 with no adjustment for the optimization methods now possible.

When you have code written over 12 years trying somehow to cooperate, a higher and higher percentage of what you write is just translation code interfacing old with new. Every new thing is one more level on the house of cards and it just gets harder and harder to keep from crashing it to the ground.


Has this been my site, this would have been the sequence:

1) Bug and trap scan VW then enable ASAP. One week, max. Yes, that will tick off you paying members, but traffic is the lifeblood of the site. Make the members happy by immediately adding 90 days to every membership and promise a fully working system by then. Post daily progress reports.

2) Spend about 3 weeks just deciding how to rebuild the system because even if there are no traps and no missing code, it is still a good time to start over. Create a special category on the BB for community input and launch open discussions on how each part should work. Don't worry about someone stealing code - the battle is for hearts and minds.

3) Every 2 weeks add something serious - BB, titflash, playground, redclouds, homeclips, funbags. You gave everyone 90 free days, so there will be little bitching if you do the free stuff first.

4) If you are not done with the pay sites by the time 90 days is up, extend it more. Keep the community happy above all else.

As long as you keep your audience from wandering away, you will win. As it is, if they finish on the 15-day schedule now proposed, VC will actually be beating them on daily visitors by the time it is up and VW will have lost.
