For example, the amazing Manda and the glorious Honora have both submitted pics to VW in the past, and when you search their names those contris (back a few years unfortunately) show up. However, if I wanted to add those two lovely ladies to my "Friends" list or simply "follow" their contributions to the site (hoping they make more one day) there's no way that I can see to do that.
The new social aspect that VW tried to introduce is nice, but seems to not be completely thought out.
