When the account update page asks for "first name" and "last name" is it requiring real names?

In the past I do not recall any connection between my real name and my username/account beyond the credit card signup (not that my memory is flawless), whereas now I seem to be required to verify my real name as part of the signup process, and my real name was also contained in the update email I received.

I don't mean to sound paranoid, but given the business about the Tampa journalist claiming to have a database linking usernames and real names, it makes me nervous to see this connection as part of the sign-up process. Others can help with this, but a really important security measure would seem to be breaking the linkage between real names and usernames, to avoid any future misuse of such information, say in connection with a power struggle within the company....

Any other thoughts on this?

Good point Rug Roller. It's wrong and not necessary to give real name to register. It' should only be needed for cc which is supposed to totally seperate. Sounds like a new low for the new out of this world site. What in the world are they thinking? Let's hear the wisdom in this from Kiki. What a pathetic joke this has all become.

Hey there guys.

We are asking for that info as we will be personalizing the members areas. When you log in, you will have options to edit ad change stuff around in the near future. This is why we request that info. It has nothing to do with credit cards etc. You do not have to specify accurate details in those fields of you don't want to. Its up to you.

Ah, great -- that's all I really wanted to know. So I can just put First Name: Rug; Last Name: Roller (although I hate it when people call me "Rug"...).

You might want to specify on the registration page if possible that while the fields are required, real names are not. That's what caused the bit of hesitation for me.

Don't forget, even if you use an alias, they proved in the original email inviting you to update that they have your real name on file somewhere, which aside form the c/c sign-up was never provided. So the C/C is NOT separate from RC WHATSOEVER.

My non-flawless memory neglected to inform me that my full name has actually been in all of the renewal notices I have gotten from HC and RC, at least for the past couple of years.

I do think it would be better security practice not to keep these connected in-house by VW, but I don't consider it an urgent priority under the current circumstances.

Admin1,

Will we be able to pick a nickname for the BBs, etc?

If not, I also would like some way to change the information that I entered for "First Name" and "Last Name".

Also, any idea as to when the BBs will be working?

Thanks!

This is the method we will be using from now on to authenticate all our users. This way you don't need the staff to change your usernames in the future. Your email address will be able to be changed by the staff only, whereas you can change your nickname once a month without our assistance. This setup cannot be changed.

Yes. The BB will have a separate section for you to create accounts and choose whatever username is available that you want.

We do not store any credit card data on our network. This is a federal crime and is punishable with extensive time in the prison system. I just wanted to clarify that. We house the first and last names of account holders and associate the email addresses with them to identify our users and nothing else. Your data is not sold and/or distributed to any third parties.

And where did you get this information from? I'll repeat what I posted in my last reply. We do not store any credit card data on our network. This is a federal crime and is punishable with extensive time in the prison system. I just wanted to clarify that.

Sorry to hear that. Let me know when the paranoia goes away so we can discuss your issues and try to find a resolution for you.

I'll tell you where...from an email generated by RC Membership that included my first name, MI, last name as a salutation. That information was only provided when I originally signed up and renewed my RC membership. Now please explain to me and the rest of us how there is a total absence of CC data on your network?

The old boards asked the same thing BUT there was a warning NOT to use your real name, not a bad way to mod ify the sign up page I think and it should be easy to add that discaimer. And privacy is a huge deal for sure!!!
