CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A food supplier is accused of falsely marketing beef to Muslims around the world as meeting halal standards, exporting products that weren't slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law, federal prosecutors allege in a major fraud indictment. What the hell has our Department of Justice evolved into?
Midamar Corp., based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sold at least $4.9 million in beef to customers in Malaysia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and elsewhere that did not follow the halal practices. The Department of Justice accuses the producer of often not having Muslim slaughtermen present and did not pray or recite the "Tasmia" prayer.
Midamar's founder, 73-year-old William Aossey Jr., pleaded not guilty. His sons, ages 40 and 44, were scheduled to be arraigned Monday in federal court in Cedar Rapids. Midamar issued a statement calling the charges a violation of the U.S. constitution's separation of church and state, saying it was inappropriate for the Department of Justice to judge halal practices. Aossey says his food company has been shut down and he's been forced to lay off all 80 employees.
