Vets Breathe A Sigh Of Relief

Well, we might have avoided another war in the Middle-East. Our vets are breathing a sigh of relief. There are a lot of long faces in Congress; many wanted to express their patriotism by sending our troops to fight in Iran. It's time again to review how we treat those who have served.

a. 43% of vets receive food stamps. Congress is set to curtail the food stamp program.

b. 1.5 million vets are at risk of becoming homeless according to the VA. "At risk"is defined as living below the poverty level.

c. Our government sent our troops to Iraq, Afghanistan and (to a lesser extent) Pakistan, Our government cut veteran benefits in 2012 and 2014. Thanks vets!

d. The new DOD budget calls for $618 billion in spending to make tanks we pull into the desert to rot, planes that we do not need, bases all over the world and massive waste. There is little money for our vets and new cuts are proposed.

e. Cheney pushed for the Iraq war. His old company (in which he still has stock) was awarded $39 billion in no-bid contracts.

f.
Since the U.S. went to war in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, about 2.5 million members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and related Reserve and National Guard units have been deployed in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, according to Department of Defense data. Of those, more than a third were deployed more than once.

In fact, as of last year nearly 37,000 Americans had been deployed more than five times, among them 10,000 members of guard or Reserve units. Records also show that 400,000 service members have done three or more deployments.

g.
Already, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have produced more disability claims per veteran than other wars on the books, including Vietnam, Korea and World War II. While Vietnam extracted a far higher death toll – 58,000 died in that war – the total number of documented disabilities suffered by recent veterans is approaching that of the earlier conflict, according to VA documents.
h.
“Many Americas don’t understand the full cost of war,” said Sen. Bernard Sanders, an independent from Vermont who chairs the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee. “But we have a moral obligation to take care of every veteran who has been injured in war. And when we do that, that is going to be a very, very expensive proposition.”
i. Some in Congress are upset that we are not going to war with Iran. These are the same ones that are saying that we have no money for fixing our infrastructure or taking care of those who served plus they have no idea how we would pay for such a war.

j. Congress has recently held up a veterans jobs bill and a VA Hospital funding bill. Thanks vets!

k.
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

Dwight D. Eisenhower
l. Many politicians are rushing to prove they are better Christians than the other politicians. They seem to forget that bit about helping the needy. Many of our vets are needy.

m. 22 veterans commit suicide every day. 22 veterans commit suicide every day. 22 veterans commit suicide every day.

n. We often forget, when we talk about veterans, the spouses and children who served at home. They are veterans too and are forgotten by our government as much as those deployed. There are few programs to help them.

Bartender asks: "Why the long face?"

Our vets are breathing a sigh of relief.
That may be the case but those still in the military are smart enough to know Obama's actions have assured there will be a major war that may include nukes. The vets won't have to fight it, but those still in the military will.

It's easy to see why the politicians have such an easy time manipulating the public, just look at the posts. Judging from the posts after my OP, the consensus seems to be "fuck the vets." If you're advocating a war with Iran, let me know when you are signing up (or is it your children that are going to do the fighting?) We should all be ashamed how we treat our vets.

My daughter used to have a poster in her bedroom that showed a curly headed 2 YO. The caption read, "Washington has found a war for every generation. I wonder where Chris" war will be?"

The right wingtards still think there are WMDs in Iraq, even though Bush said there weren't any.

Perhaps if the Bush administration conducted due diligence, then we wouldn't be having this discussion...

About 19 million battlefield deaths marked WW II.

Man is a dangerous, irrational animal.

To be fair, though, the average man is nowhere near as dumb as Elkin.

Everybody knows there were WMDs in Iraq.

That's why Hillary and Kerry voted FOR the use of force there.

Whether they were used up, or hidden, or shipped to Iran, nobody knows.

"Everybody knows there were WMDs in Iraq."-johnforbes

Well, everybody except the lead U.S. weapons inspector at the time.
And anyone who, like me, heard him say so in so many words a week before the invasion.
But other than that minor detail, you're completely wrong anyway.

"That's why Hillary and Kerry voted FOR the use of force there."-johnforbes

Nobody voted "FOR the use of force" in Iraq, you partisan hypocrite.

They voted to authorize the use of force if needed to put some teeth in the investigations that Saddam was impeding.
Force wasn't needed because the authorization worked.
In the end, Saddam let the inspectors do their job and they concluded there were no WMDs in Iraq at least a week before Bush invaded.

Why did Bush do that?
Because the weapons inspectors' report was going to be official one week later and Bush knew his window to do what he was determined to do from day one would be closed to him since the Authorization would not support his invasion any longer.

For someone who lives in the heart of the nations politics, you sure are naive when people blatantly play politics with a situation right in front of you. It's like you just fell off the truck.

"Whether they were used up, or hidden, or shipped to Iran, nobody knows."-johnforbes

You're wrong there, johnny.
LEROY knows.
He knew a guy who told him he saw some trucks.
