Kerry says the military's concerns are “baloney"

Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday the Taliban detainees released in a prison swap for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl could indeed return to terrorism but dismissed the argument that the deal will put U.S. troops at risk.

Kerry told CNN’s “State of the Union” the argument that our troops in Afghanistan would be more at risk was “baloney” now that the Taliban commanders have been released, particularly because the United States is winding down its military presence in that country.

“Our military role in Afghanistan is over,” Kerry said. "We’re going to have very few people in that kind of position.”

He argued the detainees, released June 3 to the Qatar government, could return to battle -- but with a big risk for deadly consequences.

“I just think that’s a lot of baloney because, to whatever degree it may be true, they will wind up putting themselves at the mercy of those people who are very effective (at) who are there, who will deal with those guys,” Kerry said.

“I am not telling you that they don’t have some ability at some point to go back and get involved, but they also have an ability to get killed if they do that,” he continued.

The detainees were released from the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after Bergdahl was set free by his Taliban captors in eastern Afghanistan.

Cheryl Brandes, the mother of Army Pfc. Matthew Martinek, purportedly killed while searching for platoon mate Bergdahl, suggested on “Fox News Sunday” that the detainee release, combined with troops leaving Afghanistan, is a “massacre waiting to happen” for the U.S. military personnel who will remain in the region.

Kerry strongly defended the decision to recover Bergdahl, amid strong evidence he deserted his post.

"What I know today is what the president of the United States knows, that it would have been offensive and incomprehensible to consciously leave an American behind, no matter what, to leave an American behind in the hands of people who would torture him, cut off his head, do any number of things, we had to do what ever it took to get him back." he said.

Kerry is really a fucking idiot, if he thinks these guys are not going to try and get payback at any cost.

I think this one is going to leave a mark.

When the released terrorists start killing Americans and others again, Obama will say remember when I warned "'absolutely' a risk in freeing Taliban inmates" I was right. Kerry will say remember when I said "I am not telling you that they don’t have some ability at some point to go back and get involved", I was right. Liberals will applaud them for their foresight.

Kerry was always a dope, as witness his idiotic testimony to Congress when he was young.

Kerry did it again this morning, he said the 5 released would be stupid to return to terrorism because to do so would be dangerous for them, they could get killed.

The fact that they are terrorist commanders, tells us they don't do the dying, they sent others to die for them. Kerry is truly an idiot.

Yep, and Kerry doesn't understand that these 5 terrorists will certainly kill innocent people who may not be Americans.

Wasn't the goal to help Iraq, to help the people of Afghanistan, to protect innocent people from terrorists around the world?

Look at the bombing in Nairobi, in Dar es Salaam, etc.

Spoken like a true liberal, the term muzzie is a derogatory term and you should be ashamed of yourself for using it referring to our Muslim friends. Of course conservatives are concerned about Muslims who are our friends and allies that will be slaughtered by the terrorists Obama released, aren't you? Apparently they're nothing but muzzies to you, seek help for your hatred.

RealTool still doesn't understand the word "satire" and is clueless when he encounters someone being facetious.
Of course, the term "muzzie" is a derogatory term used almost exclusively by conservatives and they should be ashamed.
I hope RealTool doesn't suddenly develop amnesia the next time Insipid, sillydaddy, or other reactionaries here call them "muzzies" again.
Anyone want to make a bet?

I have no problem calling a terrorist a muzzie, but Elk used it on our Muslim friends and allies who fought with us against the muzzies.

"muslim friends"

That's a first from a conservative.

Little Mr. Elkin, if you had ever served, you would know that America has at least tried, at various times, to help the less fortunate of the world.

Why would any rational, sane human not want to prevent the slaughter of innocent people around the world?
