Chicago (AFP) - Americans are enthusiastic about the promise of science but lack basic knowledge of it, with one in four unaware that the Earth revolves around the Sun, said a poll out Friday.

The survey included more than 2,200 people in the United States and was conducted by the National Science Foundation.

Ten questions about physical and biological science were on the quiz, and the average score -- 6.5 correct -- was barely a passing grade.

Just 74 percent of respondents knew that the Earth revolved around the Sun, according to the results released at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago.

Fewer than half (48 percent) knew that human beings evolved from earlier species of animals.

The result of the survey, which is conducted every two years, will be included in a National Science Foundation report to President Barack Obama and US lawmakers.

One in three respondents said science should get more funding from the government.

Nearly 90 percent said the benefits of science outweigh any dangers, and about the same number expressed interest in learning about medical discoveries.

But Elkin, this is the usual baloney wherein liberals believe those who believe what they do are smart.

Elkin, on the best day of your life, you couldn't answer more than a few "Jeopardy!" clues.

Nor could Obama or Hillary. Ever heard they speak sans notes?

The reality is that a prudent person, conservative or not, should be cautious about a new theory announced to have gained the "preponderance" of this or that learned group.

Why?

Because the entire history of science involves episodes of false certitude.

Little more than a century ago, Lysenko ruled certain areas. Then he didn't.

Manned airplane flight was deemed impossible. Until it happened.

" Ever heard they speak sans notes?"

Wanna try that one again? You probably should use notes this time.

Ever heard johnforbes speak Sans a belt?

He's always fashionably thirty or forty years behind the times.

Clownhicker looks quite fashionable in his lime-green Sansabelt golf slacks.

The 20 lbs of adipose tissue cascading over do interfere with his swing.

You may want to check your crib notes before you start patronizing people...

Priceless!!!

LMAO

Well, answer the question, kiddo.

Ever heard Hillary or Obama speak sans notes?

They come across as pretty much babbling clowns.

And Elkin, be honest, do you watch "Jeopardy!" every night? It is off during the Olympics on many channels, but come on, Elkin, you aren't bright enough or educated enough to answer questions on that show.

Yet you wish to prance about claiming expertise on climate change.

Elkin, the work "they" was a single letter typo. Anybody could understand, in the context of the sentence, the letter to insert.

If that tiny task exceeds the outer limit of your WAIS, then more's the pity.

As to patronizing attitudes, an arrogant, lightly educated kid such as yourself will encounter -- and deserve -- many.

John Forbes, when you step in dog shit you should wait until everybody walks away until you lift your foot and cause a stink.

:D

Priceless!!!

Elkin's postings, which reflect the brain-dead babble of the typical leftist, are not priceless.

Elkin has never heard of Galileo, or Copernicus, or Kepler, or any of the scientists discussed in prior historic episodes of false certitude.

Not even Clarence Darrow could defend Elkin's egregious stupidity.

Elk is the penultimate illustration of what V.I. Lenin meant when he described his followers as, "Useful Idiots."
Elk, even the folks on your side wish for the most part you would just STFU rather than try to chime in and support the Marxist points of view they espouse. You are embarrassing them as most things that are discussed here fly well over your head without so much as mussing your hair let alone making an impression.
And frankly, it's funny as hell.

If Elk is the "penultimate" I guess that leaves only Insipid in the position of the "ultimate" illustration of the "useful idiot".

(Insipid obviously doesn't even understand what he himself said, and he criticizes someone else's intelligence.

Another ad hominem attack from the village idiot.

I suppose those thermometers, CO2 sensors, and satellite imagery are all fake. Thousands of climate scientists who spend a lifetime conducting research, publishing data, and building their reputations...........all based upon falsified data.

Was it falsified or just misintrepreted???

That's right Johnnie boy it's all fake as you claim you fucking moron.

There's a reason that Elkin posted nothing about Galileo, Copernicus, or Kepler, or any of the scientists discussed in prior historic episodes of false certitude.

He had no idea when the work of Freud, Mendel, and Planck appeared in English, or what their advances meant in the history of science.

Instead, Elkin and Clownhick urge global warming -- like Obama and Kerry -- as an article of political faith.

Did anyone actually read this study?
In the NSF study, the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago asked:

Now, does the Earth go around the Sun, or does the Sun go around the Earth?

How long does it take for the Earth to go around the Sun: one day, one month, or one year?

More disturbingly, in 2012 a majority of Democrats (51 percent) could not correctly answer both that the Earth goes around the Sun and that this takes a year.
The same study said that, while not a majority of believers, Republicans have a better "gist" or understanding of the evolutionary process. And another recent study by the same group (linked to in the article in the Washington Post) shows that Democrats are more likely to read horoscopes, and that more Democrats believe astrology is scientific.

I'm thinking that this thread could or should have had an entirely different title.

Just sayin'.
