Don't Think You Need More Education?

If you don't think you need more education, go to the following link:

In my own career field, the Bachelor's Degree that I earned wouldn't get me a job today.

Back when I went to college, a local law school had a deal where you could combine your 4th yr of college with the 1st yr of law school, so you could complete both in 6 yrs.

I didn't do that, but it was interesting.

There were also some low quality law schools back then which only required 2 yrs for the LLB (which turned into the JD in 1970).

America does need to rethink its educational system, which wastes a lot of time.

By the way, the case method of teaching law, which dates to Langdell, is another waste of time generally.

John, I don't know about law but the scientific and technical fields are going so fast that it is impossible to keep up with all of the new knowledge.

BTW: I came across this in one of my searches. Naturally it's not made in the USA.

It is only in relatively recent history that law schools have required an undergraduate degree.

In the 1950s the choice was mostly law school OR undergraduate. Some did both, but is was not required.

Recently, those who held BS's in law decided they needed a doctorate, so they awarded themselves doctorates.

Now the degrees in law are (in order) Doctor of Jurisprudence, Master of Law, Doctor of Philosophy in Law.

Very revealing.

Yep, the change, which happened for most law schools in 1970, made no sense because it said the former LLB, the basic degree, is now a doctorate, but it you want a LLM (the most common one is in tax) that comes after the JD.

The reason there was little objection was that lawyers who already had LLBs could send in a small fee and get a newly named JD back in the mail.

A relative of mine used to jokingly ask family members to call him "doctor" after he got his JD.

Although I don't think attorneys need a doctorate, they do need to know how to BS, so I think the BS degree should remain a requirement.

It is a Juris Doctor, and the same thing as what used to be the LLB.

The first professional degree a doctor or dentist usually gets is a doctorate, so there's that.

But it is also the initial degree in law -- a bachelor's in the sense that the next professional degree is typically a LLM.

And I've never met a lawyer who ever called himself "Doctor" unless he also had a MD or PhD.

Some preachers with DDs call themselves "Reverend Doctor."
