Washington (CNN) -- He spent more than 21 straight hours railing against any government funding for Obamacare. Then Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas joined the other 99 senators from both parties in voting Wednesday to move ahead on a spending plan expected to do just that.

The rare 100-0 vote on a procedural step means the spending measure that would avoid a partial government shutdown next week now can be amended by Senate Democrats to restore funding for President Barack Obama's signature health care reforms, which had been eliminated last week by House Republicans.

Cruz led a group of tea party conservatives in trying to block Senate consideration of the spending legislation because Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid made clear his caucus would remove the provision that defunded Obamacare.

Cruz is seeking to fight Obamacare at every step.

Others, like McCain and his ilk, believe in some sort of theoretical future attempt to fight Obamacare.

So Cruz voting for it, everybody knew that would happen.

It always pays to have guts, to be willing to fight for what you believe in. Cruz did that.

Obama is counting on Repubs to let him get his base addicted to Obamacare as a basic "right." After that, the federal government will endlessly intrude.

When 100's of millions of Americans feel the negative impact Obamacare will have on their wallets and their healthcare Cruz will be a top contender for President in 2016...Cruz took a risk now but when people realize he was spot on, he'll get our votes.

The really sad thing is that McConnell and the others didn't understand that boldness is its own reward.

McConnell and other Senate Repubs sat around afraid that they would be blamed for any governmental slowdown.

But the govt never really shuts anyhow, and voters recognize courage.

What a concept -- a politician who actually did what he said he would do.
