So, what purpose does the Republican Party serve?

It's clear. To attack all Democrats ceaselessly with totally false made up irrational accusations so as to provide cover for Democrats, especially President Obama. At this point absolutely no one would believe any accusations brought by the Republican Party and it's sympathizers. This leaves President Obama free to pursue his mostly corporatist Uganda. Not quite as anti-American as the corporatist agenda Republicans would push, but good enough for most of the wealth class. It's important to have the Republican Party push an agenda of social repression and fundamentalist religious autocracy in order to scare the shit out of the American public and keep them from observing the extention of the corporatist state.

Jib well done Republicans.

There is only one team on the playing field. Both of the parties serve the wealthy and are owned by corporations.

The social semantics game is just a political hustle. I just have to snicker at political partisans. Especially the extreme ones who predict big landslides and big changes coming from their "party".

You are of course correct that there are only two major parties and both are primarily corporatist. There are however extremely important distinctions.

Both parties function to the purpose described to distract away from the observation by the people of the corporatist truth and the total lack of any free market capitalist economy.

However, Republicans add the principles of keeping as much of the wealth as possible away from the people who create that wealth by their labor, while Democrats believe that the people should share in some low cost base level of decent healthful living from the wealth that they create WITH THEIR LABOR.

Democrats believe that the people should get some crumbs off the economic table and be able to survive and have some aspects of a decent life.

Republicans believe the people deserve nothing more than the right to create wealth for the wealthy and then go into a hole and die.
