BELCHERTOWN (CBS) – Shortly after midnight Tuesday, seven people were caught trespassing at the United States' Largest Public Water Reservoir.

State Police say the five men and two women are immigrants from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, and “cited their education and career interests” for being in the area. Police have learned they are chemical engineers and recent college graduates.

The Quabbin, in Belchertown, is one of the country’s largest man-made public water supplies. Boston’s drinking water comes from the Quabbin and the Wachusett Reservoirs.

State Police say there were no warrants or advisories on any of the individuals.

All seven were allowed to leave and will be summonsed to court for trespassing. The FBI is investigating and routine checks of public water supplies have been increased following the incident.

The seven individuals currently live in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland, Northampton and New York City. Police have not released their names because a court date has not been set.

While in the past, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta has focused on airborne routes, CDC is now focusing more research on the waterborne viability and resistance to disinfection of such agents of smallpox, anthrax, botulinum toxin, tularemia, and hemorrhagic fever viruses, which are Category A biological agents of high concern, even small amounts placed in a water supply could kill thousands before detected. Such research is not new, and other characteristics that are relevant to an agent's potential as a biological weapon include the agent's stability in the drinking water system, virulence, culturability in the quantity required, and resistance to detection and identification processes . CDC is also stockpiling antidotes and vaccines, has established a disease surveillance network in hospitals and other health care facilities to detect and identify unusual unexplained illnesses, and is working with public and private laboratories to facilitate the detection and identification of biological agents in the event of a terrorist attack upon our water supply.

The effects of dilution, deterioration, and water treatment make an anthrax contamination of drinking water an extremely remote possibility

If they are here on visas......then they should be kicked out of the country !

Anyone (Bilbo, Elk) who would immediately dismiss and defend this as innocent behavior and start making partisan political accusations about those who are suspicious of these people are highly suspect themselves, and should be looked at by authorities.

American citizens are free to trespass? Based upon their backgrounds, the location they were at, the time they were there and lack of ability to explain what they were doing their...they should be behind bars until "thorough" investigations including searches are conducted. If the investigation and searches turn up nothing they should then be escorted to the airport, placed on airplanes home.

Their student visa's are privilege extended by the United States, not rights! No one from another Country has a "right" to come to our Country and study here.
