The highlight of Sen. Rob Portman's BuzzFeed Brews interview Monday night wasn't his pitchy rendition of Randy Newman's "Burn On," nor was it his remark that George W. Bush "certainly did his level best" during his tenure as president.

It was that the conservative senator from Ohio admitted that, yeah, he smoked pot. The hot-button question came seconds after Portman took his seat for the interview, a Cleveland-brewed Great Lakes beer in hand. BuzzFeed's John Stanton opened the interview by telling the crowd he'd recently seen photos of a young Portman from the '70s and '80s, and that he looked "a bit like a dirty hippie with the long hair.""It raises the question," Stanton said to Portman, "did you ever smoke weed?"

Portman shook his head as the crowd laughed, let out a defeated sigh and said, "This is all off the record, right?" and then, "Yes."

Portman said medical and recreational marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington State "isn't the right way" to fight the war on drugs, but that law enforcement isn't either. He instead favors drug courts, which offer problem-solving programs for nonviolent juvenile and adult offenders with drug and alcohol problems.
As for his own children, Portman says he doesn't encourage them to follow in his pot-smoking footsteps. "When I talk to my kids about the fact that I did experiment when I was young, and [that] I hope they don't," Portman said, "I tell them having spent a lot of time now in this field."

Conservatives hate government spending, except for the drug wars.

Legalize, regulate, and tax. But wait...new regulations. Republicans can't do that. It goes against the ideological screed....

Present "conservative", nee pseudo-conservative, politicians seem to always support the least effective most costly solutions for problems, anti-sex education for teens policies that lead to increased teen pregnancy and disease, anti-drug education and treatment policies combined with huge government police state that costs billions and increases drug problems, etc, etc, etc, etc., anti-health care policies that increase health care costs, increase disease and death.

I agree with you Bilbo, our Government needs to crack down on illegal drug use, even Holder admitted 70% of crime in America is related to drugs. Druggies commit crimes while on drugs then they commit more crimes to get more drugs...then consider the health care costs related to drugs. Dudes America needs to do something about drugs and we need to do it hard and fast.

No, not at all. We need to help people who are dependent on drugs. We need to leave people who lead normal lives alone. We need to prosecute people who endanger others. We need to throw serial dangerous alcohol abuses in jail.

Here's a proposal.

We eliminate all criminal drug laws and all the associated police and justice activity saving a shitload of work and expenditures.

We enforce actual criminal law and put actual criminals behind bars, especially white collar criminals.

We refer violent and criminal drug users to mandatory treatment and have them serve the appropriate time for their actual crimes.

We offer free drug and addiction treatment to all who want it.

Save a shitload.

Do something real and effective.

Regulate drugs much like we do alcohol and acrobat and collect taxes.

Eliminate all criminal drug trafficking and violence.

Win, win, win, win, win, win.

Why would we want to do that when the vast majority of crimes are done by those either on drugs or trying to get money to get drugs? Druggies should all be locked up until they're detoxed and then drug tested until we're sure they cured. Violent crimes would fall more than 80% and our streets would be safer, plus we be doing the druggies a favor by locking them while they detox..win, win for everyone. I say start rounding them up!
