Missouri Republican claims 'legitimate rape' rarely results in pregnancy

U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, who won Missouri's GOP Senate primary earlier this month and will face incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in November's general election, said Sunday that he misspoke when he claimed "legitimate rape" rarely resulted in pregnancy.

Answering a question about whether or not he thought abortion should be legal in the case of rape, Akin explained his opposition by citing unnamed bodily responses he said prevented pregnancy.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," Akin said of rape-induced pregnancy in an interview with KTVI. A clip of the interview was posted online by the liberal super PAC American Bridge.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin continued. He did not provide an explanation for what constituted "legitimate rape."

He added: "But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. You know I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

In a statement Sunday, Akin wrote that he misspoke in the interview. He maintained his opposition to abortion for victims of rape.

"In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year," Akin wrote. "Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve."

Lumpy, you might want to look up information on Pregnancy resulting from Rape - the stats indicate that less than 5% of women raped become pregnant. Note that the 5% number is taken from "One time unprotected sexual intercourse" and not not just from rape alone.

I'm not defending the politician in any way, but his statement is accurate - incidence of pregnancy caused by a rape is very low.

I don't believe his statement was accurate. Rep Akin didn't say the "rate" of pregnency from rape was low, he said a womans body knows its being raped and rejects the pregnancy. A very stupid statement and he knew it, the reason why he quickly came out with a statement saying he misspoke.

There you go, selectively taking parts of an overall statement and cherry picking ones you want to use and others you want to ignore.

And he's right, it's rare, but not for the reasons he suggests.

I disagree with him on the protecting the child crap, a rape that results in pregnancy should be viable for abortion if the woman chooses that option, and there should be no restrictions, no watching an ultra-sound, no protesting outside the medical center...

Cherry picked in the same way that " First of all from what I understand, from doctors, thats really rare" Rep Akins said of raped induced pregnancy. I as yet have not read about or heard of any womans womb being able to discriminate between rape verses loving sperm.
His (Rep Akins) quick retreat saying he misspoke tells a story of its truthfulness.

Actually, I've clearly stated he was wrong in this thread, about why women that are raped don't get pregnant the vast majority of time - he was absolutely correct in that Rape rarely results in pregnancy.

I have not defended the shit once, only pointed out that one part of what he said is accurate and backed by Women's sites, Doctors and Court records, the other part, as I've mentioned, is completely wrong.
