In an email sent to Fauci on Jan 31, 2020, virus researcher Kristian Anderson wrote: "The unusual features of the virus make up a really small part of the genome (< 0.1%), so one has to look really closely at all the sequences to see that some of the features (potentially) look engineered..." Anderson, who runs a viral genomics lab, said he and others "all find the genome inconsistent with expectations from evolutionary theory."
Of course, Fauci knew in 2018 that gain of function research would be controversial and evoke Mary Shelley concerns.
Later, Daszak organized a Lancet letter condemning the Wuhan lab leak theory despite having a significant conflict of interest (his EcoHealth Alliance got millions of dollars). This letter was used as a rationale for censoring lab leak theory talk from FB, T, and YouTube on grounds of anti-Chinese racism and debunked conspiracy theory.
On Feb 29, 2020, Fauci reiterated that there was no need to change lifestyles.
On March 10, 2020, Fauci: "If you look at the totality of the country, the risk is relatively low of getting infected."
Through March 31, 2020, Fauci and the WHO and the Surgeon Gen all said there was no need for healthy members of the general population to wear masks, and they all emphasized earlier studies showing that mask-wearing caused greater face-touching.
In April 2020, multiple sources indicated no animal host had been found and the Wuhan lab leak theory remained the most plausible, but that discussion was tamped down on media outlets for the better part of another year until everybody, including Fauci, stated that the Wuhan leak theory should be further investigated.
