Having a skill is fine, and it helps keep the economy going, and it does pay taxes.

However, having the freedom to practice a skill, that comes first, and that depends upon national defense, and that depends in a dangerous world on soldiers and policemen.

Also, assuming people in the private sector are more skilled than those serving in the military is, generally speaking, a fairly arrogant assumption.

As for those serving our country DM, anyone whos an E-5 and above is required to have a Bachelors degree. E8 and above has to have a Masters. But if you were really as educated as you claim you would have known that.
