An upset Serena Williams attributed a crucial call by the chair umpire that led to her U.S. Open loss to Naomi Osaka to an issue of gender.

Williams, 36, on Saturday suffered a swift 6-2, 6-4 loss to Osaka. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion appeared to be thrown off after losing an entire game in the second set because of three separate game violations.

“You are attacking my character,” she continued. “You will never ever ever be on anther court of mine as long as you live.”

Her third violation came after she called the umpire a “thief,” leading to the automatic loss of a game.

It was at this point that Williams sought out the referee and said the harsh call had been made because of her gender.

“Do you know how many other men do things that are much worse than that? This is not fair", she said to the referee.

That last sentence is an eye opener. She lost to a 20 year old nobody and got to angry she forgot to keep pretending she's female.

All you have is a transcript. You don't know how it was said in context.

Try emphasizing the word "men" in the quotation and it means something entirely different from how you read it as an angry conservative tool. Say it out loud.

The champion was in tears as fans booed at the start of the trophy ceremony. With at least a little class, Serena chose not to air any grievances on the court telling fans to stop booing so Osaka could enjoy her moment. (As if there was any other choice.)
But it didn’t matter. The celebration was tainted and the title will be too. Even in defeat, Serena Williams always makes it about Serena Williams.
