Odd that tourists accidental deaths in Mexico have sky rocked in the last 15 years. The latest example are two Europeans who the Mexican police said rode their bikes off of cliffs and were totally at fault for their deaths. The brother of one travelled to Mexico to pick his brother's body up and Mexican authorities provided a sealed coffin and highly recommended it not be opened due to the injuries of the fall. The brother opened it anyway and found his brothers head and a foot had been amputated, the body of the other European had a bullet wound to the head. Turns out after an outside investigation Holger Franz Hagenbusch and Krzysztof Chmielewski-Podroznik had been robbed, tortured, murdered and dumped off the cliff. Mexican official knew it all along but attempted to cover it up.
Mexico is a very dangerous place and the worse of their worse are crossing out borders and are in a city near you!

As with many others, I went to places such as Acapulco and Cancun long ago.
But, you know, there are many places to vacation and with all that is going on I just prefer to go elsewhere now.

Tourists are killed and /or robbed in Mexico more often then you think....
I know of one myself, a coworker......he went to the Yucatan peninsula ..he came back in a box..
Robbed and killed.
Another guy I know was stopped by federales about 100yards from the international bridge and
accused of smuggling....they let him go a few minutes later when he gave them his wallet...! :o

We went to Cancun about 8 years ago with another couple, the other couple decided to go for a moonlight stroll on the beach, they were both robbed and brutally attacked, even though they never ventured off of the resort property (which we warned not to do at night). Two other couples who were also out for a stroll, came to their aid before they could be beaten worse. That was our last trip to Mexico. The resort security filled out a incident report but didn't search the resort ground for the punks, said they would contact the Mexican police. They never heard from the police. We were expecting the resort to issue some type of warning the next day, didn't happen, couples were out again the next night unaware of the dangers.

Yeah, they cover that up because it is bad for business.
Same thing in Jamaica.
You can't jog your usual distance inside a resort enclave, so it is a good idea to bring a means of self-defense when out for a run.
