NJ is heavily Democrat, which is why it is a high-tax haven for illegal immigrants.
In VA, Gillespie was very much lacking in charisma and charm, and he was also a RINO.
So Democrats are celebrating, but VA went for Hillary in 2016 and is presently a Dem state (commonwealth) anyhow.

johnny, the Dems flipped 18 seats out in the 'red' part of Virginia. (which is EVERY part of the state except the big cities.)

VA is a complicated state.
It used to be dependably Repub, but then long ago in the 1990s elected black governor Wilder.
So it isn't a matter of getting to Richmond and there's only rednecks in pickups.
The last farm vanished from Fairfax County, and then Loudoun got more suburbanized.
And there are simply tons of illegal immigrants (who can vote if they want) around D.C.
So, while it isn't an overwhelmingly Dem state, it is a Dem state.
