Manufacturing Jobs

It used to be, in my area, that when you graduated from high school you tried to get a job at Western Electric, Crown, Cork & Seal, Bethlehem Steel, Armco, Proctor and Gamble, Chevrolet, Lever Brothers or one of the several breweries in the area. If you were lucky enough to get one of these jobs you were set with a job that paid a living wage, benefits and a good pension when you retired. Each of those listed companies had a large manufacturing facility in the area. The areea's Bethlehem Steel was one of the largest steel mills in the world. Sadly Bethlehem is long gone as are all of the other companies. Even our breweries are gone although Guinness is moving into the area with 80 jobs.
Foreign car companies are building plants in America but the parts are mainly made elsewhere and the cars are just assembled here. I looked at a supposedly American made car recently and the engine was made in France and the transmission was made in Turkey. I doubt that any so-called American car these days is 100% American.
I have an article in one of my magazines about the Black hawk Helicopter. It is touted as being made only in Mesa, Arizona. Further down in the article it says that 280 foreign suppliers contribute to the aircraft. Even our military is outsourcing? What would happen if we had a major war? Today, we could never mobilize like America did during WWII.
It would seem logical that our leaders would be scrambling to increase our manufacturing base. But we must fight each other with issues that don't really resonate with the majority of the electorate.
