In July, China unveiled a massive, national plan for the future of artificial intelligence, to guide both commercial and military development. Its timeline caught Schmidt’s attention. “By 2020, they will have caught up. By 2025, they will be better than us. By 2030, they will dominate the industries.”
For Schmidt, the take-home was clear: “We need to get our act together, as a country…This is the moment when the [U.S.] government collectively, and private industry, needs to say, ‘these technologies are important.’”
But, he said, the Trump administration isn’t doing that. In fact, several moves are putting the U.S. at a disadvantage.
For example, Trump’s 2018 budget request slashes funds for basic science and research by $4.3 billion, roughly 13 percent compared to 2016. (Trump’s military budget does increase money for basic science and research in the Pentagon, but only by $117 million.) While there’s lots of private and corporate money going into AI research, those funds don’t guarantee advantage on a national level.
“It feels, as an American, that we are fighting this conflict with one hand behind our back. What I would rather do is not adopt the Chinese policies, but…fund basic research. The Trump budget does reduce that. It’s the wrong direction,” Schmidt said.
The Google leader also slammed Trump’s multicountry travel ban and other immigration policies that would close America’s doors to smart students, researchers, and entrepreneurs who want to come study and start companies.
What do you think is going to happen when we become "The Late, Great United States of America?" Keep defunding education, science and cutting edge projects that will keep the USA in the forefront of the world. Keep electing those candidates that do nothing but will; shake up the status quo. Keep throwing money at our favorite projects that are bottomless money pits. Keep defunding the qualified inspectors that will ensure that we get a dollar's value for every dollar we spend. Remember my post about the F-35? $400 billion for a plane that will never be ready for combat. (so says the DOD chief testing officer) Solution...throw more money at it to try and solve the problems. I hate to tell you all this but the Russians had two fighters in production before the first F-35 flew that are better than the F-35 (even if it would work as promised.) Israel is buying the F-35 from us. They are buying it without the electronics and armaments because their's are so much better. Doesn't that tell you something?
Our airports are the laughing stock of the world and would be suitable in the 1980s. Super fast bullet trains are in service all over the world but the USA hasn't even got one ready for construction. Our infrastructure is failing so bad because we have neglected it for so long that it will now cost trillions to fix it. We can't fix these things because "we are taxed so high." The only countries with lower taxes than the USA are Mexico, Chile, Cuba and Korea. But the special interests are saying that we must cut taxes (especially their's.)
I am tired of hearing all about how bad this or that program or section of our government is; tell me your solution.
