Same can said about a country having laws telling people what they can and can't do. Religion does the same thing for many, it provides a sense of order to their life, to each their own. It's when someone tries to force their chosen religious "laws" on me that I don't appreciate.

My belief and agreement with her has nothing to do with religion, I feel marriage is between a man and a women.
